Meat & Eggs

At what age did you give your LO meat? Did you grind it or just let them chew it? How about fish? Oh and eggs? Did you give only the yolk or the whites too?

My DS will be 9 months on July 6. We started solids late because he wasn't ready. He does some self-feeding but gets easily frustrated. We still nurse ALOT. When he was born, he was 10 lbs 8 oz and off the chart. Yesterday I weighed him, he was on 16 pounds 15 ounces with a wet diaper and fully clothed. He is falling in the 10% even on the breastfed baby charts. I am just wondering if he needs protein? I never gave meat to my other 2 kids because I hate the look & smell of pureed meat. So I am just wondering about protein.

Thanks in advance.

My 9 mo has only gotten meat in this last week. He tried fish for the first time about 2 weeks ago. The meat he got was smoked, so it was shreddable, and I just pulled off a small bit and put it in his mouth.

I tried eggs the first time right around 6 mos (yolk only) - he spat it out. He still spits it out if it's hard-cooked. But my DH fed him some of his omelette the other day at a restaurant and he loved it (the eggs were really soft and creamy).

My DS is 9 months and the kiddo loves everything. I tried eggs at about 6months, whites only. He loved them. Now I give the whole egg, scrambled, in pieces he picks up. It's not a regular thing for breakfast, but maybe once a week. A decent staple of "protein" - not that I feel like he needs it, but I'm trying to be well-rounded.

We started meats about a month ago - so far he's mainly had ground turkey, not pureed, just in small chunks. Enough that if he doesn't gum down, he could swallow ok. No choking issues here, but again, he eats everything and has never choked. He's had some small pieces of chicken and family has given him some fish (I wasn't around for those tastings and haven't tried it yet myself).

I will say that on the days he gets ground meats (normally out of burrito fixings I'm making for myself, or like the meat of a pasta dish), he gets more constipated. Drinking more on those days seems to be key for helping it work through his system. The constipation doesn't seem to be painful or annoying to him, but it's certainly a "harder" diaper. And stinkier (but I guess that just comes with it)

dd's been eating meat a bit here and there since she started solids @ 6 mos.
sometimes it's prechewed or sometimes it's little bitty bits here & there. however, b/c of fear of allergies/intolerances we haven't done dairy or eggs. She really really likes fish, dunno if you consider that 'meat' or not, but that has worked well for us.

My LO loves salmon, chicken, turkey, and meatballs even! I fed her some curry chicken salad and she went nuts over it. I never gave her meat in a jar, as that gives me the creepies, and all the meat we give her is cut into little pieces and hormone free etc.

I like to make her little omelets, which she feeds to herself. Yay, no allergies to milk and eggs!

i did yolks at first and then realized i didn't need to be so freakish about the "allergy" thing so we do scrambled which she likes ok but to be honest she really likes egg salad. i dunno. it's such an "old man" thing to eat.

stuff from ground meat is really the easiest and you don;t have to worry at all about how to serve it. i've given her whole meatballs and also bites sizes of ground meat. both work.

chicken salad is easy. soup chicken is easy. we've had liver pate. i love when she actually eats liver...so much iron.

i've seen pics of blw'ers giving their babes like, whole pieces of steak or chicken and just letting them suck off of it. this i don't do. for us meat is super duper expensive and hard to get and it just seems wasteful to give a baby something i get maybe once a month just to suck on and then throw on the ground.

fish is really no problem at all and super easy for her to eat. it just flakes off. salmon, cod, tuna...whatever. anchovies in pasta sauce.

oh...didn't really answer the question. we started meats right away. around 6 months. one of her first foods was meatloaf because she just grabbed it right off the table.

It looks like your real concern is more about your baby getting enough protein. Have you talked to your ped? I hear it's pretty common for a baby's growth to taper off, but if you're worried definitely see your doctor!

We started meat right away with DS, around 6 months or so. We started with ground turkey mixed in with carrots or peas or some other veggie. We quickly progressed to small pieces cut off our food that he picks up. He LOVES meat! He's had turkey, beef, pork, chicken and duck. He has 7 teeth and chews/gums the pieces but still swallows some whole, I'm sure. I never find meat pieces in his diaper the way I do with peas, green beans, grapes, cherries, berries etc. I guess meat is easy for him to digest? . We also started with eggs around 8 months. I scramble an egg in a little melted butter about twice a week or so for him and give him pieces. He really likes it. I too was concerned about protein when we first started solids so I started adding a little almond butter to his oatmeal in the morning. He seemed to like it and there were no allergy issues. In fact, I haven't found a food yet that disagrees with him. I also started whole milk plain yogurt around 7 months. That has loads of good protein and fat. HTH!

The pp's already gave advice on the food, I just wanted to say my son was 8 lbs 7oz at birth, and only 18 lbs at one year. He's still a skinny kid, he was 6.5 years old when he hit 40 lbs! He spent a long time off the charts "underweight" as a toddler, and he was fine. His ped said as long as he's active and healthy, being so skinny wasn't a problem.

I don't really know about whether or not your lo needs meat. I don't give my babies pureed anything except applesauce. I cook and mince (or chew) if necessary before giving it to them.

I don't know when I started with dd. Ds is 9 months and I gave him egg yolk for the first time a week or so ago. He loves it. I fry an egg until the yolk is firm on the outside, and just a tiny bit of liquid left in the center; then it is easy to separate from the white and he can self-feed easily. I'm not militant about self-feeding, and am happy to finger things into his mouth for him if he is really hungry or getting too frustrated.

I am about ready to try fish and chicken/turkey with him, but I haven't done it yet. I've started pretty slowly with solids, but he hasn't had much trouble (my dd had a lot of digestive troubles).

What about beans? I haven't given ds any legumes yet, but soft-cooked beans or lentils would be great for protein, etc. Also, maybe fats? I sautee a lot of the vegetables we eat in olive oil or coconut oil, and if your lo can eat avocados, they are great too.

It sounds like you are still breastfeeding a lot, so I'm sure your lo is getting what he needs, and maybe you just want to focus on more protein and fats when you do give solids to maximize on that...as long as he doesn't have trouble digesting them. Goat yogurt might be a good thing to start sometime too...goat and sheep milk are higher in protein than cow milk.

my 9 mo gets strips of meat or very finely chopped meat. we did egg yolk until recently when we introduced the white too (we had allergy testing, which isn't fool proof, but it helped us narrow down that he has a wheat allergy).

we didn't really do purees at all. dark meat chicken and lamb are his favorites so far. he really likes black beans too.

he doesn't necessarily eat all of the stuff we offer but he enjoys tasting
