Which Water Bottle? Nalgene? Aluminum?

DS is 2 and has food allergies to dairy, egg, and nuts. I am pretty positive he is allergic to fire ants as he had a horrible reaction to them this week and had Mickey Mouse hand for a few days...

Anyway, we bring his food and water everywhere. We live in Texas, where 98 is a cooler day in the summer. I am looking for a good water bottle that doesn't leak like my previous ones. I have been questioning my current pick, which is Nalgene. It's BPA free, but I don't know about pthalates. I figured you all would be more knowledgeable.

My first instinct is that aluminum is not the way to go---so why are so many people using them? I don't wear mainstream deodorant because of the aluminum, I don't vax, partly because of aluminum, so why I am going to put our water in it?

Glass is great, but even the lid would be plastic, and sometimes we're in a situation where we can't bring glass...

I know I'm not well educated in this subject. Just wondering if someone can fill me in so my next water bottle purchase is more informed.

Thank you very much!

I use kleen kanteens (stainless steel), mason jars (there is some bpa in the lid), and this other type of glass bottle. Do you know lorina soda? it comes in a bottle like this: http://www.lorina.com/Site/eng/Corporate/index.html the water only touches rubber. I've bought the soda a few times (for like 4 bucks) drank it or emptied it out, rinsed it well, and voila, cheap-o water bottle that looks good, and is super nice. (heavy though.)

I prefer to avoid plastic, even bpa free. I mean, it probably still has next years "big scary toxin in plastic". That said, I almost certainly will buy a bpa free food processor at some point. but minimizing, and there are better water bottle options. kleen kanteen is lighter weight too.

I did a lot of reasearch when I was looking to buy a water bottle for my DD. The best product I found was the SafeSippy2. It is made of stainless steel, has BPA free plastic mouth piece and handles, and silicone sleeve and valve. My DD loves it.

We have KK and they are fine except they lack insulation. You can buy neoprene insulating sleeves but I don't really want to buy one.more.thing. Dd has a stainless steel Thermos brand straw sippy (silicone straw parts) and I really like that - it keeps the water cold for a long time. They make larger sizes now too that they carry at Target and I want one for me.

I have a stainless steel bottle that I like a lot. Although it was made in China, so who knows what's really in it. (Can I say that? I don't mean anything racist, just that their track record is not so great.)

Another vote for stainless steel here. We use Kleen Kanteen (is that how they spell it?) and some that we got at MEC.

It's hot here, so I am all about insulated bottles. Both kids have Foogo stainless steel straw bottles made by Thermos. Love them! Klean Kanteen makes an insulated one now that I'm thinking about for myself.

^^^My two-year old has the Foogo (with a silicone straw) and I love it. My 4 year old has a Kleen Kanteen but I bought the sports cap (which is plastic).

The Kleen Kanteens look interesting, and now they have an insulated version. One thing to note about them is they are made of 18/8 stainless steel, which means they have 8% nickel in them, for those with nickel sensitivities. Acidic food or drinks in particular will leach the nickel out of the container.

Another vote for Kleen Kanteen.

Thank you all for the wonderful reponses and links! Time to hit up Amazon.

Yes, I would like to avoid all plastic if possible because of the next discovery of bad junk in it for us, and a few other reasons...

Anyway, I knew I could turn to you all! Stainless steel!

Bumping this to update the thread with a link to water bottle information:

(all stainless steel bottles are being made in China)

And BTW, I just LOVE the HercuGlass strengthened glass water bottles and tea mugs they have out now. joy.gif

They also have HercuGlass strengthened glass baby bottles, for those who pump.
