Childrens book storage

How do you store them? I love the look of the sling type bookshelf/storage units, but I wonder how the functionality of them is.

If you have something like this, do you like it?

I don't like them because you can store just as many books in a plastic dishpan and take up way less space. I had them in my classroom, and one is fine if they show the covers of the books well. They are inviting you to read. But my issue is getting dd to STOP reading long enough to eat dinner or whatever, so I liek to use bins on shelves. We have a TON of children's books and they are easier to put in bins than just straight on a shelf because they don't fall over as much.

I love this idea. For young children, it makes it much easier for them to choose a favorite book when they can see the cover and recognize the picture.
However, I don't think it would hold very many books, and certainly the small board books would get lost in the pockets.

I may buy one for my DS for his bedroom, to display our taller picture book collection, maybe rotating the books occasionally...

I want to do rain gutter shelves in L's room, if I can find enough free wall space.

I was hoping to read some ideas here for my 8 year old son. The sling type shelves may be suitable for littlies but not much use beyond 4 years old.

The gutter ones I feel are also more suited to picture books for younger children, and would require a lot of free wall space.

We have so many piles of childrens books and I want to do something about them but am thinking that we may have to store some of the classics away in covered boxes to keep dust out, ones that have been read which I don't want to get rid of.

DITTO! That is so cute! Aaack! Cannot stand the cuteness.

We have books in several places. In the basement they are on regular bookshelves. In the family room I have a low, wide basket for them. In his room I have those wire-cube shelves. I have some stacked like shelves and some on the floor like baskets. Those work really well for all kinds of odd sized books.

I love the style the OP posted but it just doesn't enough books to make it practical for us. It would be more of a decoration than actual storage.

Hmm, I'll happily come over and let you stare at my baby's cuteness while I watch you do it. I'll even drink your beer.

I'm the opposite of handy. It's the only reason I haven't done these shelves in L's room yet. Carhootel and I managed to BREAK a cabinet from Lowe's while trying to put it together.

You and Carhootel can come over, we'll attempt it for oh, maybe 30 minutes?? Then we'll give up, let the kids go nuts with the rain gutters, have a beer and stare at L and all of her cuteness. Sound good?

Depends on why a regular bookcase won't work for him.

Just found another idea, similar to the gutters.

I love the book sling idea. I think if we did several of these we could store all our books....and it doesn't take up floor space in our tiny bedrooms.

ooohhhh, i like that too. there's a slight chance i could actually make that myself. if i could sew.

We've got something like this for the baby's room. My intention is to rotate books through it so that they aren't just stuck on a shelf and never read because she doesn't see them- which is what happened with my older daughter.

It's great so far- but she's only 5 weeks old.

You might be able to find curtains that would work. What are they called, the kinds for windows with a pole pocket at each end?
