How high should a trellis be in a veggie garden?

I have raised beds that are about 1-foot high. I followed the instructions in Square Foot Gardening to make trellises for them -- it says to use 5-foot high conduit. The assembly was easy, but now with them set up I'm wondering if that's going to be high enough. I have them staked into the ground outside the beds, so they're really only 4-feet higher than the base of the plants.

I'm growing sugar snap peas, green beans, vine tomatoes, pumpkins and cucumbers. I'm wondering if I should have used the 10-foot conduit instead...

Some of those might try and grow to more like 8' high. But 5' will be ok, things will just reach above and cascade over, a bit of a disorganized mess at the top.

They'll just go up and over, like the PP said.

Depends on what you're growing an how obsessive you are about it.

Mine are 5' above the ground because I used 6' poles and drove them about 1' deep. Just train your plants to go back and forth, up and over. As long as they are off the ground they will be fine.
