We have those too in addition to a couple Mimi the Sardine ones which are similar. Very easy clean up. Good coverage too.

This thread is kind of funny. Bib wars! It's the new WOHM vs SAHM.

We don't use actual bibs, but I do cover DD up. I knot one of those huge white flour sack dish towels around her neck. It covers her entire torso and her legs. Even if she's eating clothes-less it keeps me from having to wipe her torso and diaper cover off.

I guess another reason we never went the topless eating route is that we're in Quebec - we need to wear sweaters in the house in winter unless we want a whooping Hydro bill So we're saving money on heat and preserving water

We stopped around 12-15 months, I think? Honestly, DD isn't that messy of an eater. (Totally strange, I know.) Oftentimes, I wipe her hands and face and a few dabs on her clothing and she's done. I think it helps that our messiest meals are dinner and so it's at least getting dark if I bring her out with a couple of food spots then . But when we did "bib her" we loved the Bumkins with sleeves. Those are fabulous bibs.

I sometimes put a bib on DD who's 2yrs and 4 months. Mostly I forget, I don't always need to, but sometimes I sure do.

DD will be three in August and still uses a Bumkins bib. The kind that covers the arms and torso. She hasn't complained about it, and it definitely saves us a lot of laundry; we just rinse it after eating and hang it up to dry.

I feel a little silly putting it on her when we have other kids over who are much younger and not using one, but they seem so practical to me. I could probably use one myself, as it drives me crazy when I get an oil stain on a shirt I love!

we've actually never used a bib with dd. We do have a couple of old plain tee shirts that we keep in the dining room and we pop one on her when it is meal time. She is really into trying to keep it clean all of a sudden, but it is not a big deal if she spills.

My 2yo wears a bib nearly always. And to combat the problem of food getting into her lap and stuff, I started wrapping a big cotton lightweight tea towel around her chest (with the bib over the towel) and draped over her lap. It catches what the bib doesn't and makes clean up really easy. Well, it means we only have to usually clean the table and sometimes underneath.

Mine is 14 months and we have to use bibs. But most of his mess is on his lap and beside him in his high chair. I now tuck a flat diaper in his shirt and drape it over his lap. And then I put the bib over that. Clean up is easy except when he grabs the bib or diaper before I get to it.

I also leave him in his pajamas for breakfast and he takes his bath right after dinner. So lunch time is the only time his clothes matter. But the bib and napkin are really to keep his high chair clean more than anything.

DS 1.5 refuses a bib. ugh!

Fairly often.

I have an Emily Post book from the 40s saying that children should wear bibs at the table until they are 5. She presents it as a GD thing-- so they won't get in trouble for messing up their clothes.

My DD1 used a bib till about 3 1/2 yrs. With the other 2 kids I never used bibs. Mainly because I could never find ones I liked. They all had tiny pieces of cheap velcro that never stayed on the child and just drove me nuts.

If you and your DD still like using bibs I would keep using them. I see nothing wrong with it. Saving clothing stains is worth it!

If we have having something really messy I will lay a towel in their laps though and take off their shirts.

My 26 month old still wears a bib. I do enough stain removal as it is.

Wanting your children to wear bibs while eating is a matter of choice or need, but consider the following: I am a mother with five children who are five to 10, including boy, girl twins who are seven. They are not messy eaters, but they all occasionally spill or splash something when eating. The problem is that I never know when that will happen, unless it is something that is naturally messy, like spaghetti. They all have bibs to wear, just in case. They do not object; they all rather wear a bib then get an item of clothing stained and they enjoy their meals much better because they are not worried about spills or splashes and they are not hearing me telling them to be careful, sit up straight or lean over their plates. Their bibs are a clear vinyl smock style without baby drawings or themes on them. They cover all of their fronts down to their waist with a pouch along the bottom. Teasing has never been an issue either. All have had friends join us for a meal, some have refused to wear a bib initially but then asked to wear one when they see my children with them on. Also I had one child tell me she wished she had worn one after spilling something on her dress. I always wear an apron when cooking or cleaning and will keep my apron on when eating something messy. Wow, questions for the non-bib people:

1. PLEASE teach me how to do laundry.  Because, even WITH wearing bibs, almost everything DD owns has a stain.  We're trying to pass this stuff down to a baby cousin with picky parents, so this drives me nuts.

2.  Doesn't the child get cold if you go the topless route?  Our house is so cold all the time that I have DD and I bundled up in big sweaters all day.  We remove the sweater for meals, but I feel like she would freeze without the shirt.

So, to answer the actual question, DD is almost 2 and most definitely still wears a bib.  Apparently she's on the messy end of the eating spectrum :)  I lay a towel over her lap, too.  She's so used to it that she has a fit if she doesn't have her towel and her bib.

newmamalizzy- I think the answer to the laundry question is to do a lot of laundry often! I know it is not the most environmentally friendly thing (though I do use organic biodegradable sopas only) but I do a ton of laundry- so if something gets dirty it gets cleaned pretty quickly before the stains can set. I mean- usually one large load a day, sometimes two.

Or, if something gets spilled that will stain, I wet it right away and put soap on the spot and rub it out somewhat- and then throw it in the laundry basket to be washed later that day.

Ds wears a bib when he lets us keep it on- and we usually change his whole outfit after eating also.

Felt like I had to add this to the discussion...this was six or so months ago.

My almost 3yo son uses a bib when he eats yogurt, soup or ice cream, etc. He asks for his "yogurt bib" in those cases. Otherwise, he doesn't use a bib and hasn't for a few months. He's fairly neat when he eats.
