Reality check

So we started CD DS when he was about one month old. Until pretty recently we have been continuing to do this. To make a really long story really short, in November of last year DS got 2nd degree chemical burns from the deoderizing spray that is supposed to go on after the poo but was put on before he wore them by a family member who was watching him for the first time. We spent 4 days in the burn unit at our local hospital. Anyways I seem to be having like a mental block about cloth diapers now. I feel bad that I'm using disposables for so many reasons (all of which you all know or you wouldn't be posting in the CD forum). I want to use them again but just can't seem to get past what happened. DS has not permenant issues from this but it was very tramatic for all of us. Anyone have any suggestions about how to get me past this???

No suggestions, but sheesh, I don't blame you for feeling that way at all! What a scary thing! My dd got a chemical burn on her face once...

The only thing I can think of is to go shopping and find some really cute CD that get you into the groove again--not sure if that's shallow or not, but I like to shop, lol...could you sell the ones you have and order different kinds? Or is it the idea of CD, not just the dipes?

Oh, mama! I am so sorry that this happened! But, I need to ask, what deodorizing spray are you tailing about? Do you mean something like a bum genius dirty diaper spray? The stuff you spray on the diaper when it is dirty? Just curious cause I don't know what you are talking about...sorry, just wanted to be more clear, that is all.

Ok, anyway, for diaper suggestions, my favorites are Motherease one size and sandy's, also snugglebottoms with Velcro. They are all really good diapers, and all reasonably priced. If you want to spend a bit more....like if money is not a concern, then you have to have some ElBees! They are so so nice and squishy. I like the all velour ones.

Anyway, hope your l.o. is doing better. Hugs!

Is there anything that you think would make you feel better about using cloth right now? New diapers so that the ones you have won't remind you of that bad experience? Maybe extra soft fabrics or natural fibres to pamper you DS' poor bum? That must have been so awful!

Yikes! What a thing to have to deal with.

A new pattern to diapering with the cloth (like with a different deodorizer, different bum ointment, new diapers, etc) would probably help you feel like you're doing it differently this time - you could even type it out and post it where your ds gets changed for everyone.

Having separate, simpler for others diapers that you reserve for when he gets watched (some pockets or aio's), and just leaving out a squirt bottle of water and wipes would be fine, you don't really need a lot of the extra stuff (keeping other stuff you like put away for when you do changes instead).

Running Mama it is the bum genius spray that goes on after the diaper is soiled.

Thanks for the support ladies. I spent a ton of time and effort on cloth diapers and am just hating that we're not using them right now.

I think that some new diapers would be a really good idea. We don't have the money right now but maybe in the next few weeks or so we will.

Def sell the ones you are uncomfortable using. That will help make money for new ones, you won't have the bad reminders around, and someone else will be able to get diapers for less than retail.

Deodorizing Spray

Just don't use it. It is unnecessary. If the pioneers got along without it, so can we. I don't even know what it is. Go old school with cotton dipes and cute simple covers.

How about starting with one dipe a day so you start getting into it again.

I would also look at creating a new plan for dealing with cleaning the dipes. Eliminate the deodorizing spray (I didn't even know about these), use baking soda instead & switch to a trusted detergent. Make adjustments as needed if there is stink.

BTW - totally scary that something intended for diapers is so caustic!
