Single umbilical artery

Can anyone tell me anything about this? My sister is having a girl with this. I have read it is more common in girls and about 70% of babies are fine! WE are worried her dr may have made it a bigger deal about it bc they found out she was switching care to a birth center and they were not happy with it.
They said the baby had fluid around her kidneys but that is up for question. The father of the baby had some issues when he was born where his intestines were on the outside of his body.
She is seeing the midwife at the birth center this week and I am going with her,
So any questions we should ask or advice would be nice to know,
Thanks
Sarah

A friend of mine recently had a baby with the one artery cord. He was fine when all was done, but when she told me about it I did look things up online and it can be a serious problem (but of course isn't always). In their case, she ended up with frequent monitoring of the cord (ultrasounds) and a c-section after attempted labouring as he had serious decellerations and couldn't take much labour.

I will have to ask my sister for more details, because she had a little girl with this, as well. She was fine when she was born (a little small--around 5 lbs) and also quite nervous as an infant (would sleep only a few hours per day and awake the rest). Her nervous system was not quite developed, it seems, but I have no idea if this was a result of the umbilical cord issue or not. She is 14 years old and fine today.

I have a friend who had this with her dd. They were very concerned about the kidneys to start with as it can be an indicator of problems there, they were fine but in the process of checking them they found the baby had a heart problem that was repaired shortly after birth. She is now a very happy, healthy 4 year old.

My DD1 had this and she's perfect. An OB talked me down about it by saying that it's just one of many red flags they look for, but that if they don't see any other problems, it's really not a big deal. After all, baby doesn't need the cord after she's born, right?
