My 19 mo old daughter has been breaking out with a rash, diagnosed as eczema by our ped at her 18 mo checkup. He suggested hydocortisone for treatment, but I am wondering what is the cause? Is this usually brought on by a food or some other allergic reaction? I would like to figure out what is causing the eczema rather than just treating it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Eczema caused by allergy?

my son's eczema has multiple triggers. We know that his food allergies (milk, eggs, soy, beef, peanuts) all contributed. I think the milk and eggs were the biggest triggers. He also has dust allergies, and his eczema flares when we first turn on the heat each winter--though, it could be the dry air that causes it, I think it is the dust and the dryness. Finally, I also think there is an ingredient in some soaps he reacts to, because his hands are often much worse than the rest of his body--which makes me think that the soap in some bathrooms bothers him. We try to avoid his triggers as much as possible, and use hydrocortisone when necessary. His skin has cleared considerably since we started giving him a daily antihistamine.

Yes, the big trigger for our son is salicylates, hard to figure out b/c it's not that well known.

Omega 3 fatty acids (reduce omega 6 oils) can be very helpful. As is evening primrose or borage oil.
Also chlorine is a trigger, he was itchy after a day at the water park and commonly does when in a swimming pool.

My ds's eczema is food related. The only food we know for sure so far is sweet potato, but there are definitely others.
Does your dd have any other symptoms?
Just to give you an idea of possible symptoms, here are my 11mo ds's other potential symptoms: frequent night waking, excess earwax, trouble settling to sleep, and spitting up. Those all seem to be related to what I eat, but I haven't pinpointed anything yet.
Also possibly frequent urination (though I'm not sure if this is a symptom or normal), and unexplained fussiness and hyperness. But with those I haven't noticed much of a pattern yet, in relation to what I eat.
My ds's doctor said that there was no way that his eczema (in his diaper area) was related to food that I eat. But THAT one is without a doubt related to food that I eat.

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions. I think we'll try eliminating possible trigger foods from her diet to see if we can figure it out. We haven't noticed any other symptoms, although she has been waking at night which I'm pretty sure is due to teething.
I was also wondering, is eczema always itchy? I've read itching is a symptom of eczema, but she isn't itchy at all?
