Introducing 'allergens' to toddler

Thread Starter
DS just turned 1 year old. So far I have kept him from having the following foods as I know that they can be allergenic:

Wheat
Egg white
Humus
Corn
Citrus
Strawberries/raspberries
Tomatoes
Peanut & nut butter
Nut milks
Nuts
Cow milk

I have also heard that sometimes allergies can occur or be worse if certain things are avoided/delayed so any info on that would be great also. I am nervous to start him on these foods and am looking for advice on the best time and ways to do so. Also wondering if any of you avoid any of these things for health reasons (other than allergy reasons) and if so, why?

He also has had dry skin since he was born and I am not sure if it is eczema or not. Both my doctor and dermatologist said that 'it could be' so I am not sure what I should be looking out for diet wise in relation to that (I went of dairy and wheat/gluten for a while but saw no changes).

Also wondering when fish (non shellfish) and tuna are okay?

We did give him yogurt around 10 months and he had his first and only diaper rash & was up all night so we haven't tried it since. Any suggestions on this?

Thanks in advance for your help and time!!

We never waited on allergies w/ either of the boys - from the time they started solids ~7/8 months they had whatever we were eating... If you suspect allergies, then go slow I suppose - I think the recommendations if you suspect an allergey are to intro just one food at a time, for like a week and see if you notice any reactions/changes... Good luck!!

neither did we ---exact same here and than some by 7 months-I have seen far more problems the longer people wait

I would do the yogurt again, it may not have been the cause at all
we also do honey prior to a year

I was pretty weary about this stuff too at first. I would say just got slow with introducing them that way if he is affected you can pinpoint if and which food it is. Unless you or hubby have allergies, I wouldn't worry too much. Our daughter has basically been eating whatever we eat since starting solids around 9mths. I did kind of put off eggs and dairy until closer to a year, and I feed her only organic dairy products (besides some cheese) and free range eggs. We don't eat a whole lot of meet, and if we do it's usually chicken or salmon. She LOVES salmon and has even had cooked oysters. HTH and gives you a little reassurance. Just do what you feel is right for your little one.

Naturopath's recommendations

Our son was born a little prematurely, so his body is a little more sensitive to foods than many kids. He's even allergic to soy (had a rash on his back for the longest time that disappeared within 48 hours of us taking him off all soy).

The naturopath we're seeing has done some "gut therapy" in the form of probiotics (he was breastfed for 15 months). She suggested that, when we want to try something, give a little in the morning, twice as much at lunch, and twice as much again at supper (twice as much as at lunch). Only continue throughout the day if you don't see any reactions. Then leave that food out of your child's diet for as long as you try new potential allergens so any reactions are compounding with other foods. If nothing happens, then you're good to go.
