I am training for my second marathon. I ran my first after my second son was born, he was 17 months old when I ran it. My youngest will be 11 months old for this race, so he's a bit younger.
As my mileage is increasing, I'm having trouble with my long Saturday runs. Here's what my schedule looks like right now:
6am, double pump.
6:45am, leave the house to drive to training location.
7:30am, start stretching, team meeting, etc. Run starts sometime after that.
Today was 6 miles, and took me an hour or so. At the water stop, I was chatting with another runner and felt a let down! When I completed my run, I hung around with my teammates, stretching, drinking, chatting, waiting for the other runners to finish. Talked to my coach a little, then got in my car at 9:30am to leave. I got home at 10am.
Unfortunately the baby was asleep when I got home. I showered, changed, now it's 11am and he's still asleep, so I'm pumping again. I'm rather full!! Have 8 ounces so far.
As my mileage increases (about a mile a week for the long run, so next week will be 7 miles) the time I'm away will just get longer. Unfortunately it's a 30 minute drive to get to where our team meets to run, that adds an hour of driving time to the morning. Plus the stretching, cooling down, team socializing, etc. In just a few weeks, it'll probably be noon before I get home.
I'm not worried about my supply, I"ve always had a really good supply (am tandeming my three year old and 8 month old, plus donating milk to some mamas and still freezing a little of my own stash) But I have had problems with plugs and mastitis in the past and I really don't want that to happen.
So any ideas on how I can make it through longer runs? I joked with my husband that I'm going to drive the course before my run and toss a manual pump out of the window and stop and pump! I've never pumped in the car, but I wonder if I can somehow do that? Then I can pump a little later in the morning, and again on the drive home. I can't bring the baby with me on these long runs, it's in a high-traffic area, lots of hills (so pushing the jogger would NOT be fun!), etc.
