Something fun to do in Charlotte and Asheville with a toddler & preschooler?

We will be in Charlotte for one day next weekend, looking for something fun to do with them out of the heat. Any suggestions? We are in Raleigh, and this will be their first visit to Charlotte.

ETA: I forgot we'll also be in Asheville for a day. Last year we went to some arcade/mini golf type place because we didn't know what to do. We need a better plan this time!

Our home base for the weekend is in Morganton for a bluegrass festival, but we are taking little morning excursions since the music doesn't start until later in the day.

I still remember really enjoying Discovery Place as a kid. I was older, though... I'm not sure how much toddler/preschooler stuff they have. Here's their website:

At a quick glance it looks like it might be a little over their heads, BUT there is a new one opening in the fall for younger kids! That is good to know. We'll have to plan a weekend trip for that.

Oh man, I love discovery place. But yeah, I didn't go until maybe the 6th grade.

I just took my 2 year old to discover place and she LOVED it. There's even an entire room dedicated to toddlers with lots of blocks, water play, etc.
I also recommend the "imaginarium" which the children's branch of the library.

Oooh, Asheville.

Arboretum! If it's not too hot.


And I just realized that all the things I used to do when I lived in Asheville were like the opposite of what you'd do in the morning with kids.

My kids loved Discovery Place when they were toddlers, probably more than they do now as 6 and 8 year olds. But they just had a grand re-opening today. It's supposed to be way better.

There's also Imaginon in uptown which is totally free. It's the public library combined with Children's Theater but there are plenty of things to entertain toddlers. They are just a couple of blocks from each other.

I'll post back if I can think of other places.

The nature museum in Charlotte is fun. It's associated with Discovery Place but in a different location. It's near Freedom Park.

Oh yes, Charlotte Nature Museum is wonderful, and i think it would be good for your children's ages. They have lots of interactive stuff, a play area to explore, a butterfly pavilion, etc.

in Asheville - Pack Place - The Health Adventure downtown would be great, and the wildlife center http://www.wildwnc.org/

in Charlotte - definitely check out Discovery Place!

Also, in Asheville Rhi and I can give you restaurant/bar recommendations like crazy - and good stores too - Littlest Birds in W. Asheville on Haywood is consignment kids stuff/cloth diapers/babywearing/cool funky local stuff

Oh yeah, because I need a store with babywearing stuff.

I'm sure we'll only have time for one bar if we have time at all. Thirsty Monk.

Breakfast will be at some place we went to last year that had tons of dairy free/vegan options. Dairy free scrambled eggs in a restaurant!!

Discovery Place JUST reopened with their new turtle exibit...and my DS (just turned 2) went a few months ago and LOVED it - they have new improved toddler sections now that weren't there when we were little!

I think it's IMAGINON...and it's awesome - my 2 y/o LOVES it! (Plus it's free and they validate parking.)
