Why not walk instead of jog

If you don't like jogging why not try to do some walking instead. Walking is a good way to lose or maintain your desired weight.

I've been walking/ running for awhile now. I have some extra pounds to lose and asthma on top of other health issues (plus this awful heat!!) but a nice brisk walk up and down the hills here with some spurts of running is an awesome work out!

Found this in New Posts.

I just started walking.

I tried jogging years ago and really, really did not like it.

I used to walk a lot and loved it!

I wish I lived where there were sidewalks and safe parks to walk alone. I'd walk a lot more if those things were available here.

Our neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks either! It makes no sense, but I just walk on the opposite side of the road so I can see oncoming traffic. There is a nice park near us, but no where to walk - lots of woods for hiking but that's not what I want for every day exercise. Hope you can find someplace that works for you!

How do I delete this duplicate post?!

What about the idea of "bursting" -- walking and then every few minutes, running? It is supposed to super rev your system and is doable for a lot of peeps who couldn't maintain a jogging pace. Here's an article on this from Women to Women: Health Myths It's in Health myth 7: You need to exercise 30–60 minutes per day to have any impact on health.

I don't walk because I need to get my heart rate up in order to maintain my weight and fitness level.

I simply can't get my heart rate up by just walking.

I'm a walker! My knees just won't allow running/jogging anymore

I get my heartrate up walking hills, pushing my 40# child in a jogging stroller I live in a hilly area, about 1-2 miles from places we use (parks, library, etc), and I stayed in great shape all winter with this workout regimen.

This summer I'm swimming, and, while I've had to adjust to using a new muscle group (my arms, specifically), I haven't had any issues with the cardio portion of swimming. My arms give out before I get very winded, lol. I've been swimming 30-45 minute sessions.

Yes, if you walk mainly hills and use weights (stroller or hand weights), you can get your heart rate up. Me personally, I can't get to the intensity I want with walking so I prefer to run.

Yeah - this is me. Hills are great and I will do hill workouts when I've got a race on my calendar (but I run them ). But hills just aren't that continuous! I don't live in San Fran! I need to kick my a&& for 60 to 90 minutes daily to maintain what I want for me.

Sounds like you have high fitness goals 60-90 minutes to work out is just a pipe dream for me at this point in my parenting life

But for the purposes the op stated (losing and maintaining weight), walking can be very effective. For me, it is sort of a lifestyle--and I'm a big advocate My gma stayed healthy and active into her 90s walking! The rest of us ran and killed our knees way younger, lol, but running is great too if you can and enjoy it.

Amen to the parenting life quote! I should probably mention that my kids are 16, almost 15 and 13. I can EASILY leave them and get in a work out.

For me - I can't maintain and lose weight walking.
