Pain while feeding an 18 month old

Thread Starter
About a week and a half ago, I started to notice a lot of pain in both nipples while I was bf my 18 month old son. At the time, we were both finishing up a course of antibiotics for strep. He was on amoxicillian which I am allergic to. He is also teething.

Since then, the pain hasn't subsided. On my right nipple I've noticed one or two cracks and a ring around the aerola that looks like teeth marks. My left nipple is a mess. There are blood spots on the top of the nipple (near the ducts) and a big red sore spot (like the skin rubbed off) on the top. There are also a few cracks.

My son also tends to suck really hard and hold on to the nipple to see what is going on. This morning, half awake, I thought he was going to bite it off!

I have tried gel pads, lanolin, no bra (which I can't do at work), letting the sun hit them, and expressing milk onto them. Nothing has helped. My son has no signs of thrush and was just checked out by his doc (for a well baby check up).

I had hoped to do self weaning when he was ready to wean (though that is complicated by another issue) but now I'm thinking of just stopping. I hurt too much.

Help!

Oh, that sounds awful.

I agree it sounds like thrush b/c of the recent antibiotics, but I'm not too familiar with it. Maybe an allergy issue? There is a list of resources in the BF challenges forum including this link:

Good luck, and I hope you can get it figured out soon.

I'm guessing thrush too. I am having similar issues and am nursing a 17 month old who recently took antibiotics. My midwife said to cut out sugar, mix equal amounts vinegar and water and soak a breast pad and keep it on (I am just applying it after nursing and letting it air dry). Take probiotics and give baby probiotics. You can also put probiotics on your nipples. If these don't help, you can get a prescription for a couple different things that should clear it up.

It hurts! I know! But it would be a shame to let your nursing relationship end over something that can be treated. Good luck!
