Foods for during labor? - Page 2

I only threw up once during labour, but didn't want to eat much at all. (Though I remember sitting on an exercise ball in the shower at the hospital drinking broth. The height of decadence, but I was too tired to enjoy it!)

I am habitually low blood sugar though, so I had a signed note from my docotr telling the staff that I was 'allowed' to eat.

I packed a cooler with things I knew would tempt me and that I could eat quickly. Granola bars, pudding, a sandwich (but I didn't eat that.) etc.

After I got moved to the pp floor, I ate breakfast, and then lunch - the lunch was cream of mushroom soup and a tuna sandwich and it was SOOOOOO good, because I was SOOOOO hungry.

I haven't read all of the replies but I ate two grilled cheese sandwiches in the shower while in active labor and they where great.

Also by the time I was pushing I was starving and the idea of getting some food was a real motivator to me. Unfortunately it was 11:57 pm on Christmas Eve so the only thing I could get to eat was vending machine sandwich and it sucked.

I brought several juices to the hospital and found them to be perfect for me. I like the Odwalla and Naked Juice brands. Some of them contain protein also, so I thought they helped keep me going during the 24 hrs I labored in the hospital. I didn't have any throwing up problems during labor.

After I gave birth, they brought me some fried chicken and mashed potatoes and boy did I eat that up! I had no idea how hungry I was until I saw the food!

During my 1st labor I brought and ate grapes, strawberries, granola bars and Gatorade. I think the hospital also sent up a lunch tray that I picked at. I was in labor for about 20 hrs and definitely needed to keep my energy up.

Now, my 2nd baby was born on Superbowl Sunday. I went into labor after a nice nap at halftime- and after eating brisket, chili, chips, etc all day long. His labor was quick (3 hrs) and I didn't need to eat a thing during. Incredibly I did not throw up!

After both births, I wanted to eat everything within reach. With my 1st, the hospital had great room service and I ordered a huge club sandwich. Then I had to wait a little while for a postpartum room to open up and I remember that when they wheeled me up there I was balancing the plate of food and the baby on my lap.

I really wanted to watch my carbohydrate intake during labor so I wouldn't have blood sugar spikes and drops, so this was what we stocked up on at home:

ELECTROLYTES minus sugar:

Smart Water
Emergen-C's ElectroMIX (tastes nice too, slight fizz)

PROTEIN/FAT/HEALTHY CARB (low glycemic index) mixes:

Kashi Chewy Bars
Hemp Protein shake with yogurt, berries, soy milk, stevia, vanilla
Whole Milk
Ezekiel 4:9 Bread
Cheese cut into little bites, with cut up apples

Fruit juices, gatorade, popsicles, and so on were absolutely out.

My labor was 85 hours so technically I ate all sorts of things, but I was extra sensitive. For some reason grilled cheese sandwiches using Ezekiel bread were what I was craving most.

This sounds like a great idea (okay, sans the milk for me)! I think I will follow your lead!

With my second, I had a bowl of Cheerios which promptly came up during transition. DS2 was very quick...3 hours... so honestly I didn't even think about eating until after. Then I had DH bring me lots of food.

With DD1, I snuck in a cooler with "snacks for DH" ... Propel, chunks of watermelon, kashi bars, lollipops, etc. I honestly only really wanted a chunk or two of watermelon and some Propel. Now after.... I could have eaten pretty much anything.

For this guy, I'm planning on bringing Propel, Coconut Water, Watermelon, chicken broth (possibly with orzo), and ???? I'm more interested in planning my post-partum meal.

Interesting how many of us craved grilled cheese.
