I hate summer, I always think I like it until the heat actually arrives then I remember how much I really do hate summer. It was already 83F when I got up, supposed to hit 97F today. So that means where stuck in the bedrooms which do have A/C, the rest of the house will hit 90+. I will set up the pool for this afternoon and get the misting system repaired (easy, just moving it away from my bedroom patio door where its half falling off thanks to the kids) and get dinner ready to grill (still have no idea what to grill as were getting low on food and can't go shopping for a couple days, we'll be fine, just have food thats meant to be baked kinda deal, duh! crockpot!) tonight I'll remember to cook the next days food after it cools down a bit in the PM and I can leave the house open over night to cool. Outside water play is a very short term way to stay cool for us as my littlest can't handle the heat, even 30 minutes can be bad news so the pool thing would be a 15-20 min deal at most.
So... how to keep the house cool?
I have thermal black out curtains in my room which gets sun all day. I took the ones out of dd's room (her window doesn't get much direct sun) and installed them in the living room last night so we have 3 layers over a large window. I thought the drapes were thermal curtains but considering how hot it got in there yesterday on our first hot day I doubt it. (they were given to us last summer) so we now have a piece of upholstery fabric as the 1st layer (for looks) then the thermal black out liners attached to the drapes.
We have ceiling fans in the bedrooms and kitchen but oddly enough not in the living room but I picked up an awesome oscillating fan at home depot a few weeks ago that really moves air.
Left the front door open for fresh air last night (thank you security door!
) which really helped cool the place down. Need to close up everything now as its already 86F at 10am. Feels decent in here at the moment. Anyway, I need to get busy, any other suggestions? I'm buying a large window unit to cool the entire apt next week (the real fun it finding help installing it, thing weighs 108lbs!) but we gotta survive the next week at least. Being stuck in the bedroom with 2 high energy kids is going to suck big time! ok, off to cook lunch and dinner before its crazy hot here.
To think before I had kids I was working in the desert and 97 was a nice cool morning, 110F was still a nice day when you'd spent the last week in the sun working in 120F temps. Yes I'm serious! I remember because I passed out at work on that 110F day because it felt so nice out (was working in the shade too which added to that nice feeling) I wasn't drinking the amount of water work regs required, I didn't think how hot it still was. Walked inside one of the base buildings and sat down for my break and passed out. Partner came in and found me and took me back to the office and to get checked out. By the time we got back some idiot gov guy had filed a complaint that I was sleeping on the job in the conference room
I got in trouble for the heat exhaustion for not drinking what I should have and there was some big huplah about it on the gov side of things and everyone on both sides got an in-service on the dangers of working in the heat and recognizing heat related illness, AGAIN.
oh well, that was better then the safety on the job one that focused on electricity..
no, I had nothing to do with that one but I know who did!
Man I loved that job, hated dealing with gov idiots but the job itself was a blast.
I'd go back to working it in a heart beat if I could.

| ETA: its now hotter then yesterday by several degrees and the living room is still tolerable easily with just the fan. All the heat pouring in is coming from the kitchen window, planning on picking up thermal black out curtains for the kitchen tomorrow and replacing the ones in dd's room too (she has them just because any light wakes her up which includes the sun at 5am) |
