4.5yo and hungry all of the time!!

Is this normal? Is it a growth spurt? He'll eat something and then an hour later want something else. He doesn't eat things that are considered 'empty calories'. He loves all kinds of fruit, chicken, tacos, hamburgers, corn (on and off the cob), carrot sticks, Sunchips, wheat thins, chips & salsa, etc.,
I always have to travel with snacks on hand at all times because you never know when he's going to be hungry. And if I DON'T have something, he becomes severely crabby and whiny - low blood sugar? I get that way, too - very edgy if I'm hungry.

My dd was the same way until very recently. I couldn't understand how moms could travel without snacks and get away with it when she was younger. She is in the 75th percentile and was constantly growing. She has always been very active as well so that accounts for some of the hunger as well. She has tapered off a little lately, though she still goes through a few days once in a while where she just can't get enough to eat. I think this must be somewhat common though because dd's daycare has a morning and afternoon snack in addition to three meals a day so they must be used to kids who need to eat that often.

It's funny you should post this because this is what today has sounded like at my house:

But I'm HUNGRY, Mama.

AAAGGGHHHHHH! We don't keep a lot of empty calorie foods in the house, she eats things like real yogurt, whole fruit, vegetables, cheese, lean meats, eggs, etc but she is ALWAYS hungry.
