Guessing the sex via sonogram at 12 weeks

How accurate would that be? I know there is a chance being wrong at any point, but I had NT testing and the doc came in later and said it was probably a boy and gave me a picture of the boy "part". It had feet, butt and something between it's legs - could be a thumb, too, right?

I thought at 12 weeks girl and boy bits still look the same. /shrug

but, hey your doc has a 50/50 shot at getting it right... maybe it is a boy.

"Most" babies look the same at 12 weeks, but a very well trained tech may be able to tell.
There is a theory on nubs that can predict your baby's gender between 11 and 13 weeks. The following was written by an u/s tech:

What is a Nub?

A nub is a small penis like protuberance seen between the legs at 11 wks to 14 wks. It can be used to assess gender using the angle of the nub. 30 degrees up=Boy, Under that=Girl. Sounds easy in theory, but you need to get the baby in a midsaggital (side) view that show the nub. No curl to the spine either. Right side up also. Some nubs are ambiguous--they are angled in "the grey zone" where it can go either way. See the galleries for many examples. Gender guessing with the nub increases accuracy as you hit 13 wks, and is at its very poorest in the 11th week. The most "wrong" guesses will be made in this 11th week.

Still, I think 12 weeks is too early to guess gender. I would say definitely don't go buying blue until you get confirmation at your 20w u/s!! Honestly it could go either way at this point!!

Here is some interesting info about fetal sex development (just for fun): http://baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html

Did you do amnio? I think they can analyze the dna that way and tell you if it is a boy or a girl (it's more accurate than u/s). I'm pretty sure it would be hard to tell if it was a boy or girl by u/s only!

No amnio yet, I am not doing it, I don't think. Depends, I have to dicuss with Dh. I think it needs to be in a few more weeks anyway.

Thanks for the link. You know I thought there was a "nub" for while, but the doc seemed pretty sure. So I will tell DH not to go telling anyone yet.

I know they can be wrong up until the end too. Dh's cousin was a "girl" until he came out a boy when he was born.

My ultrasound tech used the nub theory at 12 weeks and guessed girl and we found out at 18 weeks it is a girl.. and confirmed with quite a few ultrasounds since then (I'm high risk so have to get checked frequently)!

She did tell us not to go pink crazy at 12 weeks though!

Exactly!!! By the way, if you haven't looked at the link already, at the bottom they explain the "nub theory" in detail with pictures! They say many times the accuracy is still 50/50 though.

When I was PG with DS2 I posted on an ultrasound prediction board and saw many 12-week fetuses that were labeled the incorrect gender. Again, I wouldn't go buying blue unless it's confirmed much later on!

My older son used to go to daycare when he was a toddler and there was another mom there with a son who was about 6 months younger than my DS1. She was told she was having a girl all throughout her pregnancy, and she had many many u/s's since she was older and had some issues. She had a total pink nursery and baby shower, and out popped a bouncing baby boy on delivery day lol!! Even though u/s has come a long way you never know 100% until they pop out!

Yeah, my neighbor's second son was a girl until 37 weeks when her second u/s showed otherwise But the 20 week had been a confident girl guess! If the tech is very experienced they might be able to give you a pretty accurate guess, though.
