what to do with these shirts??

My kids where polo shirts to school that have a small school logo in the upper left corner. I've collected a huge bag of them that are stained and outgrown, but I don't know what to do with them. I don't want to throw them out, and I don't think a thrift store would appreciate them with stains and logos. Ideas?

Your school may want them-- my school keeps a stash of similar shirts and pants in the office in case of accidents, spills, etc.

Our school has started selling used uniforms as a fund raiser, so far it's going really well and (I believe) has been pretty simple to run.

They have a box in the office where people can donate their kids outgrown stuff, then at various school events, parents evenings etc, they set up a rail with the nearly new stuff which is sold at about half the price of new uniform. Then there is a box of more used stuff which is all 20p, this is where the stuff with a paint stain or missing button goes. At 20p I'm willing to try and get out a few stains.

Maybe suggest it as a fund-raiser to your school.

THAT is a great idea.

For some schools, would it be permissible to sew a small, fun patch on the top (or bottom, I guess) to cover a stain?

Id say ask around see if anyone you know whose kids go to the same school could use them. School uniforms are expensive and Id be willing to take the time to get stains out in order to save some of the costs of a uniform.

Try to soak them in a strong solution of oxygen cleaner (like OxyClean or OxyBrite) for a few hours and see if that gets the stains out. Check the box for directions and use the most it recommends for soaking. I had a very persistent spaghetti sauce stain on DS's pants--I had tried to get it out several times with various spot treatments and they had been washed at least a dozen times. I was about to get rid of them when I decided to give the OxyBrite a try and it removed the stain completely. I was amazed.
