Mood swings and GD - what do you eat to prevent them?

I have Gestational Diabetes and I am finding that my mood is REALLY connected to how often and what I eat. I really dislike most foods this pregnancy to begin with so I am having difficulty finding foods to snack on that are good for me and good for my mood. HELP!

I feel worst by late afternoon even though I eat lunch and a snack. I feel lethargic in the mornings (also due to allergies) and this makes me feel like a bad mother for not doing more with my daughter. I have started taking fish oil again for my moods since eating fish is repulsive to me this pregnancy. I am hoping that will help a bit.

FWIW, my sugar levels are under control but I still find myself in a funk mood-wise and I feel that there must be something better for me to eat than what I am eating right now?!

Thanks!

I know exactly what you mean...I find that when I "crash", I am one seriously b*tchy pregnant lady (and FWIW, my sugars don't get clinically LOW, just lower than what my body likes, if that makes sense). For me, protein. Cheese sticks, lunch meat, etc help a lot. It is so much harder when food is unappealing and especially if you just don't have the energy for prep. Look for easy, appealing sources of straight protein and it really helps stabilize the mood swings.

It is interesting that you mention this. My midwife sent me this article talking about how seritonin levels & insulin are linked in diabetes patients.

I have a handful (about 20) almonds or (10) walnut 1/2s and a (little) bit of fruit for my snacks. Occasionally, instead of the fruit, I'll have one square of a dark (60% or more) chocolate bar with my nuts instead.

ETA:-- my glucose is in good control and had been the whole pregnancy. My GIANT 36 weeker is the product of praying tooo hard for a healthy baby!! Just wanted you to know the two are not realted!

I switched up my diet this week and have been feeling much less moody and my blood sugar is about 20 pts lower. I cut out gluten and have been eating much smaller meals more often. I start out with a protein shake in the AM. Plenty of raw fruits and veggies, cheese and nut crackers, nut based snacks, coconut and coconut water.

Sometimes I find my mood going funky when I'm not getting quite enough carbs when this happens I really crave sugar too. Try eating a few more carbs spread throughout the day of course with the loads of protein to balance it out. I've increased my raw veggies by quite a bit and that keeps me feeling pretty good as well.

Managing the sugars and moods on top of hormones really sucks. Good work on keeping them under control.
