Strange happenings

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'll try. I have a 7-wk old who is EBF. Lately he's been showing some strange and concerning behaviors while nursing. He'll tend to get fussy, pull off the breast, but then continue to root around and reattach. He'll do this several times during a feeding. This has been going on for a couple of weeks. Also, in the last day or so, he's been spitting up ALOT. Liam does have some reflux, but is on Zantac for it and it hasn't been an issue. Usually the spitting up only happens in the evening & early morning. Also, he spit up while feeding a couple of times today (while attached). I had a friend mention something about projectile vomiting at this age... don't know if this is it, but wondering if anyone else has expeienced it. Finally, he seems to be still hungry after these episodes (while bf'ing).

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this and can explain it. I don't know if I should be concerned or not (we have an appt next week). Liam just gets very aggitated when it happens (milk up the nose will do this to you) and isn't sleeping well b/c of it. Thanks for the input!

It might be that he's outgrowing his dose of Zantac -- that happened to our DS around the same age. Or the Zantac might not be effective anymore; we recently had to switch to Prevacid after the reflux symptoms came back with a vengence.

I've had two babies with reflux and they both exhibited this type of feeding behavior. It started with just fussiness and the "on and off the boob" thing at several feedings per day, then progressed to nearly every feeding and eventually got to the point where they would scream and fight every feeding. The reason they do this is that they are hungry, but as soon as they start eating the gastric juices begin to back up into their esophagus and throat causing major pain and discomfort. Imagine sitting down to dinner and having an attack of indigestion the minute you start eating.

Spitting up is normal for all infants but excessive amounts or frequency could be a sign of reflux as well.

I'd suggest asking the doctor about increasing his Zantac dose as this drug is very weight sensitive so babies outgrow their dose quickly, or ask about a PPI like Prevacid.

Here's a website that helped me a lot with my reflux babies.
