New to CD, need help!

Hi! I'm somewhat new to CD (although I've read a bit) and also new to the forum. We tried some BumGenius AIO's and also some prefolds with Thirsties covers when he was a NB, but didn't like them and my husband didn't have the patience or finances to keep sampling other brands to find something that worked for us. Thus, we have been using Costco disposables up to now. I've always wanted to do CD, and I just ordered some ME bamboo in both the One Size and Sandy styles, with the air-flow covers. Well, we tried the One Size last night, and my son was so uncomfortable. We co-sleep, and the whole night he was tossing and turning, and whimpering. I don't think it was b/c the diaper was wet, b/c it really didn't feel very damp at all. I don't know if it's the cut of the diaper or what, but he was definitely super uncomfortable and around 3am I just took it off and put him back into a disposable and he slept soundly the rest of the night. So... I'm looking for tips/tricks to try for him, or perhaps other diaper suggestions. He is a pretty slim guy for his age, just went to ped today and he is 21.8 lbs and 32.5 in tall and he will be 21 mos July 6. So perhaps we need a diaper that is slimmer in the crotch area? I really have no idea. Also, we don't have the money to continue sampling brands and what not, so would love some suggestions on what really works best.
Gracias!

I'm also new to CD (I have a 5wo and we've been using them for a week!) so I probably can't offer much advice. I was going to say, though, that the choice of a particular cloth diaper is so highly individual that the recommendations of others might not be 100% useful -- a good place to start, sure, but still probably leading down the path of trying out several brands/kinds. What works for one kid just doesn't work out as well for another. Maybe something like this would be useful? http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/produ.../tryclothfor10
If you have the $150 up front, you could try several out and then only be out $10 if you nix the whole thing.

I got several BG small AIOs with the cupon they did a little while ago, and I actually prefer Soft Bums, which surprised me, since it seems like the AIO is less work. I like that the Soft Bums are adjustable in the leg with an elastic pull and in the waist with velcro.

What about a prefold with the bikini twist fold and a cover? I used to do that all the time for my son and it is narrower through the crotch. I think you can find a picture online of how to do it, but basically you lay the flat diaper under the baby and twist it where it goes through the crotch (i used to position the twisted layers so they would be in the right place for absorbing the most pee) and then snappi (or pin) the sides in front. Not sure if this makes sense in written form...sorry.
Did it only happen one night that he was fussy? Maybe try it again and see?

DS is longish and lean, I haven't had any issues with fussiness thus far, and we've been CD 10 days now (started the day after he turned 7 months). We use bummis with prefolds (both the superbrite and superwhisperwrap, though I like the leg gussets on the brite better), Grobaby OS, and bottombumpers. My favorites are the PF with covers, and the bottombumpers. I don't know if it would be any thinner through the crotch, or more comfortable, but you could try a disposable insert at night, Flip system makes one, as does gDiapers, and I am sure there are others.

do you use any kind of stay dry liner? I found adding the fleece liners to our cover/prefold system helped a lot to keep DS more comfortable.

Thank you ladies for your suggestions! I actually managed to find one of the BG pockets that we had bought when he was born, and i tried it out last night, and it seemed to fit him much better and he slept normally last night. So maybe the fit plus the microfiber helped with that situation? But, I also have read that people have stink issues with the microfiber?

Crystal_buffaloe- thanks for your suggestion of that website with the sampler!
