The Super Sleepy Toddler

Our 23 month old loves to sleep. Left to his own devices, he will get up, then take a nap about an hour and a half later- and if we didn't wake him he would happily sleep at least 3-4 hours. He'd get up from that, and happily go back to sleep a couple hours later, waking to play briefly before dinner, then heading off to bed.

Obviously, we do not let him sleep as much as he would like. He does still take two naps a day, and sleeps a solid 10-12 hours at night. We wake him from the naps though so he does have to be awake during the day.

Once we are up and about, he does fine until he reaches a point of fatigue when he becomes SO cranky, that we do need to let him sleep.

His health is good, his appetite is that of a 'typical toddler' (as if typical exists?)

He does have some sensory processing differences, and I'm sure that accounts for some of it, but my goodness! Give me tips to keep him awake and engaged- and NOT trying to make a run for the bed to nap.

Wow--coming from the opposite end of the spectrum, that's sounds amazing. But I can see your point!

My dd loves being outside--playing in the backyard with balls, our sand table, her car, taking walks (exploring all of the neighbors' yards and steps), going to the park. We recently bought a bobike seat for my bike and she adores bike rides (she NEVER falls asleep, but you might be careful here as some kids do since you're trying to avoid sleep).

Swimming? Library story time? Running games in the house or bouncing on cushions on the floor? Play-doh?

Also making sure the sunlight is coming in and fresh air is available in the morning is stimulating. Maybe some uplifting music?

We work on trying to make sure everything is really bright and engaging. When I am home, I have him outside a lot, but my husband has less tolerance for the heat than I do, so they are outside less when I am working.

I completely understand how pleasant it sounds from the other side, as his younger brother is absolutely a non-sleeper.
