Those with private insurance and Medicaid

Are your pharmacists confused?

When I went to pick up my refill for D's carnitine, I presented the Medicaid card (we were just approved) to our friendly neighborhood pharmacist. He was a little confused and thought we wanted to *replace* D's private insurance with Medicaid.

What do I do? I asked the admin who helped me applied for the Medicaid Waiver and frankly she's not too sure herself, then she finally said to ask the pharmacist to just have Medicaid pay for it. But, I thought the drill is to have primary insur to pay for the rx and the copay to be handled by Medicaid?

So confusing.

Whatever our primary, private insurance doesn't cover, Medicaid "normally" does, especially copays. I haven't had to pay a copay forever. At least that's how it should work. Tell the pharmacist you want BOTH insurances on your child's record, not just one. I think they just bill both after your information is in their system.

tell them to bill medicaid as a secondary insurance. It's not that uncommon. We don't have it anymore, but when Linden was under a year we had both for a while and never had a problem at all. They just asked which was primary and which was secondary.

Yes, bill private first then Medicaid 2nd. They usually pay our copays.
