Measuring larger than I should?

I'm 10 weeks pregnant. I just got back from the doctor- she says I'm measuring at 12 weeks. There's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I could be anything more than 10 weeks, I was leaning closer to 9 1/2 weeks, with my calculations. I'm 34 years old. I was a twin (my Mom miscarried my sister) and my other sister is currently pregnant with twins. I do not have fibroids, so that can't be reason why I'm bigger than I should. With my son, I was a little small for the first three months, then on target for uterus size later on. I would love twins, but not getting my hopes up (should find out for sure with the sonogram on the 9th). What other reasons could there be for me measuring 2 weeks bigger than I should be, at this early in the pregnancy?

I would just guess body type. I don't think measuring 2 weeks ahead at any point - even as early as you are - is a big deal.

I usually measure large. Today I was 15w4d and measured 17-18 weeks. No biggie. Lots of things can affect your measurement: the baby's size, your size, the baby's position, etc. Two of my babies were breech throughout most of the pregnancy and that put my measurement WAY up! One of those two babies was 9lbs 11oz which I'm sure affected his measurement as well.

(FYI, the 9lb 11oz baby was easier to push out than the 7lb 6oz baby...I don't mean to insinuate that you will have a huge baby and a hard labor)

I measured 1-2cm ahead my whole last pregnancy. I'm just really short in the torso and baby goes straight out - more than average it seems. I went 2 weeks overdue and DS was 9lbs5oz.

I just was at my 12 week u/s and the doctor (not my regular midwife) drove me nuts asking if I was sure about my LMP and if I had a dating sonogram because I was measuring ahead. I am not too worried. I measured a few days ahead at my 8w sonogram. Funny thing is I haven't gained any weight with this one at all. My last pregnancy I gained 11 pounds by 10 weeks and was measuring a little behind.

I measured large early and over time have slowly gone to measuring small (by a week)

Its not an exact science.

When I was pg with my twins, I was measuring really far ahead. At 12 weeks, I was measuring 18 weeks. It was really extremely noticeable. I would guess that if you were having twins, you would see a far bigger gap between your dates and your measurements. But you never know!

I'm tall, for a woman (5'8"), and I did start out heavier than I did with my son (Maybe I just have a fat uterus?!). I'm not opposed to having twins (this is my last-short baby, so if I could get a two-for-one deal, I'd be more than thrilled), but financially, I can't even afford one little surprise baby. What annoyed me, was, when I asked the doctor what the reasons could be for measuring large, she would not answer me, she just scheduled a sonogram.

I think they generally consider +/- 3cm to be within the normal range, so I wouldn't be concerned with a 2cm difference.

Like Llyra said, with my twin I measured way ahead of schedule. At 10 wks I measured close to 16wk. At 20 wks I measured almost 30 wks.
It may be possible you're having twin but I wouldn't base it just on one measurement unless it was a really huge difference.

With my second pregnancy and so far this one I measure 3 weeks at least ahead for the first 25 weeks. Then it all levels out!.

My midwives told me that it's normal to measure within 2 cm bigger or smaller than the # of weeks you are. Also, it makes a difference WHO measures you... one midwife would consistently measure me 2 cms larger than the other midwife!

In addition to that, it's ok & normal to be a little "off" every once in a while. They will want to rule out GDM, multiples, wrong dates, etc., but it's generally nothing to worry about.

Starting at about 5 months, I was measuring several cms bigger... then, it leveled off by the 8th month.

It's easy to worry. Try to relax. Talk to your midwife or dr. about your concerns. And remember, it's NOT an exact measurement, only a general guide. Enjoy your pregnancy!
