I want to buy a bike, need advice

Thread Starter
I've been thinking about trying to ride a bike again (it's been many years, maybe 15, since I've really done it). At this point, I don't want to spend a lot of money to get a really good one, cause I'm not so sure I'll keep up with it. I've been looking at Target, but I'm not really sure what to buy. How do I know what size to get? And what kind of tires and seat are good? I will be riding in the city, any advice on that front?
Thanks, I really appreciate any help.

I would check craigslist, freecycle, garage sales, and thrift stores for an inexpensive bike in rideable condition at first. then you can see how often, when and where you ride it and go from there. if on end of the spectrum you just use it for leisurely trips around the block after dinner you might want a cruiser. if you find you would really like to use it as more of a commuter bike, then you would probably want a hybrid or road bike. if you don't really end up using it that much at all, then you won't have invested a lot of money into it.

when you do decide you need something nicer, you can go into a bike store and talk to the people there, and they can probably help you figure out what style is best for you.

here's a pretty good overview of the different types of bikes and their uses to get started with:

What kind of bike are you looking to get? If you don't want expensive, don't go the roadbike route. They start at about $500ish and go up quickly from there, and you wouldn't be able to find them at Target, anyway. They are the best for racing and fitness.

Cruisers are just that--for cruising. Generally, they are heavier, won't go as fast, have a cushy seat, and long, curvy handlebars.

Hyrbids are something in between. They are not as pricey as roadbikes (generally) and they are lighter than cruisers.

You also have mountain bikes, which, riding in the city, you probably don't want.

I would probably go with a hybrid if I were you. I strongly suggest going to a bike store and looking around, even if you don't buy. Talk to them about what you're looking for. Your best bet would be to buy a used bike from a bike shop. The bikes at chain stores like Target are really not quality bikes, have a lot more problems, and are put together by people who do not know bikes, not to mention you are supporting small, local businesses when you go through a bike shop. I got my hybrid used at a bike store for about $75. I spent about $400 for my new cruiser, and now, I'm dreaming about getting a road bike.

Hope this helps. I would avoid chain stores like the plague, though.

Don't get it at Target.

Go to a reputable bike store and talk to the people there. They can help you figure out what you want/need. There are probably many considerations you haven't even thought of. They may have used bikes. Or you can take your knowledge and go to craigslist.

^^^Yeah, that. I love going to my bike store because they *know*. I don't have to do any guessing and I usually end up saving money.
