I was hoping that some others more familiar with baby development could help me put this in perspective.
I have twin daughters (identical) that are 3 months two weeks old. One is extremely smiley and reactive, and responds much better to my trying to get her attention by voice, and will look over and sometimes smile when I'm across the room. The other will smile as well but it takes a fair bit of effort, and is relatively brief compared to her sister's smiling behavior. Frequently she seems to be focussing on her hand, the window, the light, the fabric of my clothes, and almost seems surprised, in a "you're there!" sort of way when I finally get her attention on my face. When I do get her attention, she is extremely focused on my face and very intent, but this usually only happens once or twice a day for a couple of minutes tops.
Does this sound more like a personality difference or that maybe there is something there to be checked out with twin #2?
Also, I have concerns that neither are really vocalizing much beyond kind of a "whooping" laugh and a kind of "hump" sound -- most sounds seem to be made with the mouth shut (though I certainly feel like I'm talking pretty constantly around them). Also neither are showing any interest in their reflections in the mirror (they just like that mirrors reflect light).
Am I being paranoid, or should I pursue this further? My ped. blew off my concerns about twin #2 because she smiles, but the differences feel so great to me that I am worried.
