How soon is too soon to take out my IUD?

My partner and I are going to start TTC in May 2011. I have only had the IUD 2 months now.
We are going to use charting and temping to gender sway for a boy.

Is it too early to have it taken out?

If you dont want to be pregnant within the next year, yes it is too early.

There is no way to tell you for sure how your body will react to the removal of the IUD... many women get pregnant their first month without it, many others have their cycles totally screwed up for months until their body regulates itself again.

I suggest just getting it out the last AF before the cycle you want to try (CD1 of try-cycle-#1) and hope you are one of the lucky ones to get pregnant right away!

I've had my IUD out 13 months and no success yet in getting pregnant (I had it 5 years). My friend had hers 3 years and got pregnant the second month after having it out. According to my OB, an IUD absolutely does not having a bearing on having future kids - you can get pregnant the month it comes out. So...I'm not much help, but I can say I've seen it both ways.

I had my IUD (copper) removed and a positive pregnancy test three weeks later (I have short cycles).

The reason I questioned removing it was to help chart better. I figured the longer I charted the better i'd get at seeing ovulation signs and temping patterns

You can chart with it in... it likely will not change anything about your cycle... unless you are one of them whose cycle gets all screwy after its removed. But if you are, charting wont help that anyway... so its best to just chart with it in and hope you are one of the lucky ones!

I'd probably wait - unless it was causing you problems - you might as well get your money's worth.

I had a Mirena for about 9 months and got pregnant about 6 months after removal - But, I was breastfeeding and my cycles didn't return regularly until a couple months before we conceived. So, I don't think the IUD had anything to do with the timing.

You could always chart to avoid. I think there is a thread in the family planning section. If this is what you really would like to do.

I am not sure how I could chart seeing as I wont have EWCM or ovulation at all. Not to mention my body is not making the hormones that raise body temperature during my cycle.

I am no expert, hope I am wrong, but i assumed that hormonal birth control made it impossible to chart due to the extra hormones in your system

the IUD should not make you not ovulate. You should still be getting normal cycles.

The IUD prevents implantation and kills sperm.

It depends on the IUD. for some women, the mirena keeps you from ovulating (or having a period).

Why get a $600 IUD and pull it two months later? Just curious...

I'd suggest pulling it during your period, charting to avoid for one month, and going for it. But even that is super cautious. You don't need to wait a month. Lots of people get pregnant without charting a single day. You've got proven fertility. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
If you've got the Paragard (copper) IUD, you can certainly chart with it - no problems at all.

I have heard the the strings can irritate the cervix, so your cervical mucous won't be accurate as far as fertility is concerned. Temps, I suppose, will be though.

Thanks for the advice ladies! I will probably keep it in, unless these depressive bouts get worse. Have to be patient i suppose, though I never was good at it.
I may try temping to get into the habit but wont check my CM or take OPKs.

I would say defintely do not take it out until you are really ready to TTC. I did a thread a few months back in the Im Pregnant forum to see how long it took women to get prego after IUD. If you had normal cycles and no fertility problems 10 out of 15 women got prego the first month.

I just want to reiterate what someone else said - it depends on the IUD.

A copper IUD that has nothing hormonal in it is doesn't change your ovulation, and you can get pregnant immediately after its removal.

A progesterone IUD (like Mirena) does give off small amounts of hormone - it might affect your ovulation and therefore take time after removal to get back to fertility.
