Nightmares or Sleep walking??

Thread Starter
So my 5 yr old (almost 6) has just recently stopped napping. She has always needed that extra sleep even when most kids her age stopped napping long ago. Anyway, she can't fall asleep during the day anymore so she just has quiet time now, listens to stories on cd, looks at books, draws/colors, does games, puzzles... Well for the last 4 nights in a row now she's woken up about an hour or 2 after going to bed screaming or crying or mumbling strange things. She "sees" things that aren't there (huge spiders...) and just is way out of it. We've figured out that she's actually not really "awake" but will talk to us and answer us. We usually have to bring her out into the light and get a drink or something to really wake her up or it just continues. After that she goes right back to sleep and doesn't remember any of it later. This seems to only happen when she hasn't had a nap that day. Is it an adjustment period, is she overtired? Anyone have DC who also do/did this? Is there anything we should do? It's just creepy and disturbing to have her wake up yelling and then be all out of it like that.

Oh and I used to do this I guess. My dh says I would wake up in the middle of the night seeing things, like people in our doorway, or huge spiders in the heater vents...and then wouldn't remember it later. He just remembered that I used to do it but it only lasted for like 3 months or so maybe when I was pregnant with dd2.

It's neither sleepwalking nor night terrors. What you're describing is night terrors. (I know, because I suffered from them--as well as sleepwalking-- from childhood until about age 30.) The big clues are the time of day it occurs and the things she sees, such as shadowy figures and creepy crawlies.

I definitely think it corresponds to over-tiredness or an overstimulating day, or at least it did for me. Most people will say "Oh, she'll outgrow it," and that's probably true for most kids. Because I had them into adulthood, I actually saw a shaman, and somehow she cured me. I don't pretend to know how that worked... just that I stopped getting them, and stopped freaking DH out.

There's a ton of info on the net about night terrors for you to research.

Duh- scratch that up there!

That's definitely night terrors.
My dd had those for years. They were terrifying to see.
They also would happen when she was overstimulated or didn't get enough sleep time.
She outgrew them for good at 6 yrs old.
The only good thing about it is they don't remember a thing.
