how to create vertical stripes

Is it possible to knit a scarf with 4 colors in a vertical stripe pattern - using 4 different skeins of yarn?
I've knit two strips of the same color/pattern using two balls of yarn on the same needles but they were two separate items. How do you keep the stitches connected?
I bought 4 different colors of silk yarn and want to make myself a scarf but want vertical stripes.

I want to work this scarf in cables, each cable in a different color. I am thinking of lining the backside with a coordinating color of sllk fabric.

Another idea is to knit the scarf length wise (you would have about 200 stitches for each row). I don't think you could do cables that way but it might cramp your brain less than instarsia (my personal nemesis)
