I don't want to enroll my 2.5 yo in school yet! - Page 2

My DD has a November birthday. She started preschool last fall when she was 3.75. She loved it. It was only 2 days a week for 2.5 hours a day and play based. We felt the timing was perfect for her. With the timing of her birthday she still has another year of preschool before kindergarten.

I think its up to each parent to decide what's best for each child and each kid is different. My son didn't start Pre K until he was almost 5 while my daughter started a couple of months after turning 2 (I was getting my Master's degree and for 3.5 hours a day 3 days a week, it gave me the time I needed to study). They both thrived in their environments. My son would have never been ready at 2 while my daughter who is now turning 4 would live at school she loves it so much, she is totally social, wants to see her friends and just loves it.

My oldest didn't go to preschool or kindergarten; he started school at 6.5 (1st grade) and is perfectly fine!
My second begged to go to preschool at 2.5 (Dec. bday) and loved it for both years (3s and 4s), he is starting K early next month at 4.5. He has always been very precocious and social though. I think very few 2.5 yr. olds are really ready for preschool.

DD is 3.5, and we've just decided not to send her. We were just kind of going with the flow of things and then it occurred to me that preschool isn't a good fit for DD. She does love people, but I think it's too structured for her. She's certainly not going to learn much, if anything, there. The 3YO classes are doing things that she mastered 1 year ago or more. Even if she hadn't, I don't think she's hurt any by not knowing how to count to 20 by age 4, you know?

So, yeah, we're fighting against things and not enrolling her either. (I say these things as someone who absolutely loved the classroom experience.)

My dd was 3.5 when she started Montessori, and that was the perfect age for her. Every child is different, and if you're not ready, wait!

my oldest started preschool at nearly 3. My youngest started the day he turned two. The difference was in their personalities - my oldest was not ready until he was 2 1/2 at the earliest. My youngest was ready well before he turned 2, believe it or not.

Go with what works for your kid and you, and ignore the rest.
