Ideas for keeping cat from running outside??

We recently moved from an apt to a rental home, and my 10 yr old cat has taken to bolting out the door. After the first several times of chasing him to try to get him back, i decided fine, you want to risk getting killed out here fine. So for the past week or so, i'd just let him out, and he'd come back in due time (always by nightfall.) I'm definitely pro-indoor only cats...and totally understand the issue with outdoor cats. But with two 2 yr old boys who dont get "keep the door closed" i dont see how i can keep him in. I've even accidentally let him out a time or two, because he is THAT quick.

Well today a neighbor (across the street and two or three houses down) came over and fairly aggressively/assertively told me in no uncertain terms that she had a problem with my cat (he makes her dogs bark??), that we have a leash law for cats here, and that next time she is calling the pound. He isnt the only cat i've seen outside...there are several. I dont disagree with the points she made, but i also explained that its just really hard to keep him in 100 percent of the time. but now i feel all weird like she is "watching" me to see if i slip up. (It doesnt help that the neighbors at the end of the street also have a black cat, hopefully she can tell the difference!)

So now what do i do? We're renting and its not like i can build some cat enclosure in the backyard. Not sure how he would do with a leash or tie out or something.

Any surefire ways of keeping him in???

Thanks.

We have an "indoor cat".

Now that the weather is so beautiful he is finding it next to impossible to stay indoors. We have found that taking him outside with us when we play or garden on a long leash attached to his harness seams to be enough for him. Often, after about an hour, he asks to go back in the house and has a long nap.

Maybe this arrangement might work for you too?

Yes, i think i'm going to try that. Not sure if he will tolerate a harness, but we'll see. He bolted so much less when he knew he could go out, so maybe it would help with that. Thanks!

I think a harness is a good bet. People that have unusual or exotic cat breeds like to use them so that their cats don't wander off too far or go missing. A friend of mine has bengal kittens and uses this option for his cats. He would be heart-broken to lose one of his pets.
