I've been reading about the wonders of coconut water during birth. I can't find it in Stockholm to try the different flavors, so I need to order a 10-pack from the UK. I need to pick a flavor and HOPE I like it.

I'm looking for some guidance. Thanks!

I liked plain, but never tried the flavors.

Another vote for plain. I've never tried any of the flavored kinds either.

I did not like the plain, though I can drink the tangerine, mango, and pineapple flavors over ice. I was thinking about it during birth, though, and thinking the slightly odd flavor might be one of those things that makes me sick. It's not a bad flavor, just slightly odd. I wouldn't think any of the flavors would be completely unpalatable, particularly if very cold. I've been drinking them, too, because of how good at replacing electrolytes they are.

I am worried about that. I threw-up a lot last time.

I drink the plain almost daily- I LOVE the stuff! Its funny, because I've never really though of it as 'plain' just what coconut water tastes like. Have you ever drank the liquid out of the center of a coconut? That's what it tastes like.

Check the ingredients, because a lot of the flavored ones have sugar in them- which I try and avoid...

i love plain and mango & pineapple were good too., but agree w PP, sometimes the flavored ones have too much sugar so i stick to plain. i drank it during the natural birth of my DS. it can be thirst quenching. i also found it to be great in the PP/early days of BF when you are constantly thirsty and need to stay hydrated and healthy.

one caviat - i definitely prefer certain brands over others. i like Zico and Vitococo best. i do recommend trying them before purchasing a case so you're sure you like it.

good luck!

I don't care for the plain, but love VitaCoco's Tangerine. YUM! There's no added sugar, just coconut water and tangerine puree.

Tell me about this and where to find some!

I just love the plain, though tangerine is my other one I like on occasion

I find the pineapple to have a texture and someone sediment that I don't like at all.

And yes look at the contents , it is sweet without sugar the ones with sugar are a totally different think and way way sweet. More like a desert milkshake than a refreshing hydrating drink

It has the same electrolyte balance as human...blood is it??? I'm tired.
I'm finding it on Amazon but I'm sure it's easier in the States.

Vitacoco is one of the brands I can get...but not the tangerine. I like the stuff in a real coconut so perhaps plain is ok for me. Thanks for the sugar tip mamas. Not a fan of sugar-y drinks.

I like the plain (but hard to find in a container besides coconuts here) so I usually just get the sweetened from the chinese markets. DELICIOUS!! but of course, a bit sugary!

Okay, I love the plain but I'm so going to buy some of the tangerine now.

I like the plain the best - I've tried some of the flavored ones and they taste weird to me.

Foodmachine, what a good idea, last labour I brought juices and ended up having to water them down because they just tasted too sugary and by the end I just couldn's stand anything but water, so I think I will bring plain coconut water this time and see how that goes. Thanks for the idea!

Your welcome Q.

I think I'll buy the plain and I can always try mixing it. I really appreciate everyone's thoughts. I only got offered water last time and finally a fruity energy shake which was great. This time (at home ) I'm preparing an array of drinks in advance that DH can serve up with bendy straws . He's into his bartender role.

Happy 4th!

Why are electrolytes that important? water has some... How much does one really need?

I'm sure it's a non issue if you like coconut water anyway, but does it make enough of a difference that I should try it? I'll stick with water and juice unless this coconut water thing has a noticeable effect...

Really, very few of the packaged coco waters taste like the stuff you'd actually get out of a coconut. Something about the processing alters the taste just enough to make me not care for it. But I had 2 cases of it for my labor (and went through a full case). I mixed it with pineapple juice in order to get it down.

The only 2 that I've found that taste like the real thing and are therefore drinkable as is - Real by Taste Nirvana in a glass bottle, and Amy & Brian in the green can (which is sweetened - the blue can is not bad, but doesn't taste quite right).

I'm not an expert, but what I've read is that the coconut water has same electrolyte balance as the human body so it is very hydrating. Too much water can actually give a woman electrolyte shock since it can "water-down" our electrolyte balance. I also just found water hard to keep down last time so I want a few options. I think I found a source in Stockholm .

I gave birth just a month ago and although I found coconut water quite useful during labor (I had a quick labor so I did not have to drink that much) it was a life saver during the early breastfeeding days!

My baby girl had a severe case of jauntice so I had to pump breastmilk every three hours or so and coconut water helped me to stay well-hydrated and kept my energy levels up!

I still enjoy it often, plain and ice-cold.
