Deterring creepy crawlies

We just moved into a house in a lovely wooded area. We are enjoying coming home to a lot more nature around us. But I have to say that the sheer volume and variety of insects, though fascinating, is a bit much. We do not want to kill them or poison ourselves, just deter them from the perimeter of the house or at least around the doors and windows that we open frequently. Anything natural and non-toxic that actually works (store bought or home made are both fine)?

Diatomaceous Earth powder swept under the baseboards can help immensely with ants and roaches. It scratches the exoskeleton ad makes them die but is harmless to us non insects (even if eaten). Borax or baking soda may also help. Spraying straight vinegar will deter some bugs. All these will wash away outside so you'd reapply them frequently.

Thanks. No roaches, thankfully. These are more like spiders, daddy longlegs, and their ilk so I do not want to actually kill them, as they are harmless, but just encourage them to stay on their side of the wall...I would rather share my home with them than hurt them in any way...Vinegar may work though the smell makes me rather ill. I am also not sure how effective that will be outdoors as I am thinking of something that I could spray on the exterior, around doors, windows and vents...
