How did you treat it? My dog Harry is fine because he can sleep whenever he wants throughout the day; but I cannot deal with the sleep deprivation. Every night he becomes agitated, paces, whines, barks, etc. until 2:00 am. I stay up with him because it calms him if I pet him, hold him, etc. I also need to stay up because he gets stuck...in corners (he no longer knows to back up?), under chairs, etc. Often I confine him to the laundry room, but he barks. He hasn't been officially diagnosed with sundowners (I'm not sure if dogs are) but the vet called it that; our other vet said it is dementia. He's much better the rest of the day. I’ve tried rescue remedy and it seemed to help at the beginning. (Harry is blind, deaf and arthritic so he needs care throughout the day but not at all like at night.)
After six years of sleep deprivation (first the babies, then health issues w/my son, now Harry); I'm stupid and crabby as a result of no sleep and my children are paying the price as I am useless most mornings.
TIA
Since posting, I've been searching online and it sounds like cognitive disorder (CDS). People have had success with the drug AniprylR (I’m surprised the vet didn’t mention it but they are hesitant to put him on meds. He’s lost much of his kidney function and some meds cause problems. Plus he’s always had ‘issues’ and some mood altering drugs, like alprazolam, have the reverse effect on him and cause him to be even more distressed.) Other people have had luck with choline, phosphatidylcholine, methionine, inositol, and various B vitamins – I’m going to call the vets to ask if they are aware of a product containing these supplements.
