Need help - red tip/DS in pain Maybe a UTI?

I don't have a ped to to turn too, so I'm really hoping that MDC folks can help me out.

This morning when changing DS's diaper (he just turned 2) the tip was really red. He didn't want to sit on the potty and has refused to all day. He keeps clutching at his diaper and saying pee. He is still having wet diapers.

The only thing that I could think of was that last night during his naked time (my son loves to be naked ), he slipped and caught his penis up at the edge of the table. I don't know if this is why it is red or some other reason?

Any insights?

UPDATE:

I gave DS a bath tonight and as soon as he sat down in the water and peed, he got upset and started crying. He didn't want to be in the bath anymore, I got him out and kept saying pee. He sat on the potty, said pee and cried. I have no idea what to do.

Every now and then the tip of my ds penis gets red but he doesn't act like it hurt. I would just watch him for signs of infection if it were my ds and do baking soda baths (my cure all for lots of things lol).

He may have just hurt it hitting it on the corner of the table. IMO unless he shows signs of UTI or puss (not the normal smegma) I don't think the dr is needed anyways.

I am no pro though so take it for what it is worth.
I am sure more knowledgeable people will chime in.

This could be a "separation" issue. Other signs of a UTI include:
  • Frequent urination.
  • Bad smelling, bloody, or discolored urine.
  • Fever >= 100.0F or 38C
  • low back or abdominal pain below the naval

If he doesn't have any of these I'd wait and see. Try a bath with baking soda and keep an eye on him. Hope that helps.

It sounds like he may have a a tear under his foreskin it will heal but will cause burning /stinging feeling during peeing try to get him to pee in warm water which i imagine will be hard too do since he's 2 .

The natural adhesions may have torn at the tip when he caught his penis. Just like when someone forcibly retracts the foreskin, it will be red and hurt for a couple of days. As long as he doesn't develop any new or worse symptoms, just try to keep him comfortable. A little barrier/diaper cream might help it sting less.

Thank you all for your help. The tip is still red (just not as bad though), he isn't getting as upset anymore.

eepster ~ what sort of barrier cream have you used?

Burt's bees diaper cream is great.

Another update ~ tip is still red. He refused to sit down in the bath last night because he said it hurt. The tip also now looks puffy. Not sure what is going on and I really want to avoid going to the Er.

It sounds like he definetly proably made his foreskin create a more longer tear from the table which could be like the same response as with a boy getting forcefully retracted which could take around a week to heal .

Are you using any bubble bath with him in the baths ? Maybe try to get him sitting in a sitz bath .

Sitz bath really help with gals episotomy so maybe that will help him also what about their is this cooling relief spray that you can use on your genitals . I can't remember what it was called .

In the thread I linked to there are some tips on how to help with the pain of separation. If you do take him in all they should be allowed to do is a culture of the tip to see what grows. You can also have then do a urine catch in a bag though with this kind of thing a UTI isnt really suspected because it dosnt involve the penis like this.

Have you tried OTC yeast med like monistate? what about bacatracin? I would try those first one then the other before going to the Dr. personally.

The torn adhesions might be slightly infected. Just as a cut on any other body part might get infected. Try putting a little bacatricine on it. Do not use neosporine though. Some people will react badly to neosporin on sensitive genital tissue, even if they are OK with it elsewhere.

I checked that thread. Thank you for posting it. I haven't tried a yeast med or bacatracin. I'm thinking of having him go and and get a culture done (only a culture!) to see if it as yeast or a bacterial infection.

Thanks for the good tip about neosporine.

I was able to get him to take 2 20 minute baking soda baths today. The tip is still super red, but not as puffy. I really appreciate all of the help I'm getting from this board as I hate that I have no where to turn to IRL.

If you take him in for a culture, be careful that they don't wear you down with scare tactics and retract him. It is a shame that we have to mentally prepare ourselves for a fight when going in to see a doctor with our child but often this is the case.

Hope things are resolving and he is doing better. I used lansinoh for my son a few times.

We once spent the day at the ocean and his foreskin managed to work itself through the mesh lining of his suit. He didn't notice anything until we went to take his suit off. It was pretty bad. Lansinoh helped and we also used A&D a few times.

I just remembered what an awesome medicinal breastmilk is. If you are still nursing, expressing a little milk and putting it on the red areas would probably help a lot.

My DH really doesn't want me to take him for this reason. It's just sad that I'll have to work myself up mentally if I have to go in.

I'm 24 weeks pregnant and I just lost my milk about a week ago ~ perfect timing.

When I checked him this morning, I could see a small red tear/cut at the top. I started using the bacatracin yesterday. It is still red, but he isn't complaining as much. I hope it is on the mend.

Cuts there sting badly poor little guy. I am sure with the bacatracin it will heal and he will be back to normal soon.
