Sofie the Giraffe paint coming off?

I know the paint on Sofie is some kind of safe food grade paint or something, but is it really ok that it's flaking off while my 4 month old sucks and chews on it?

My daughter's did too. I believe Sophie is 100% natural, so I wouldn't worry. I see Sophies everywhere I go, so it's got to be pretty common...

Ours is still holding steady, but I wouldn't worry with the colors being vegetable based dyes. Also, there's not much on there, so babes should be fine.

The paint is long gone off ours. The interwebs assures me that the paint is food grade, and I therefore I didn't worry about it.

This actually happened to us also. I called the company & they sent me a free one. We havent had a problem with the new one and we are going on 6 months or so.

Ours might be fading a little, but there is no flaking (we've had it for 4-5 months or so). I wouldn't like that, but I probably would continue to let him chew on it.

This matter has been resolved, but I wrote this post for another thread, and thought it might be handy here, too.

re. sanding and repainting kids' toys: If there's any concern about any paint containing lead, household, toy, or otherwise, sanding is one of the worst things you can do, particularly if you're breastfeeding. Sanding non-lead paint should still be done with a mask and using a wet-sanding method to avoid paint dust getting into the lungs, as even acrylics can contain mercury, cadmium, and other bad stuff.

When repainting a child's toy when said child may be putting said toy into the mouth, only use paints with a seal on the can that states "AP non-toxic," or "AP certified non-toxic," and that are no- or low-VOC. Polys aren't food-safe, not because of toxicity, but because they leave little microscopic holes in the finish that food and other stuff can hide in, making them a little risky re food-borne illnesses like e coli. I wouldn't worry about most polys, though, but if you're refinishing a toy, or making something new, use a salad bowl finish (you can google it.)

I haven't been working on our 80 year-old house all summer or anything...
