I have been asked to sew some suede patches on the elbows of a tweed jacket. How should I go about doing this? I know I can sew them on however I please, but is there some customary method I should know about?

The patches actually have holes punched in them already, so I will be hand-sewing. What kind of thread do I use? Or do I use something like embroidery floss? In a matching, contrasting, or chromatic color? Or is it just a matter of preference? And which stitch? I'm thinking a buttonhole stitch, so the edges are tacked down. Does that sound right? And I imagine I'm supposed to sew through the jacket lining too, correct?

Thank you for any assistance!!
