Knitting Runners~ do you have a favorite dress pattern to knit (preferably free/maybe on Ravelry) for a one year old? I want to knit my grandbaby a dress for Christmas / birthday (and figure I should start now). They moved to NC.

Indeed it is. Shocking, isn't it?! And then you add in all the other expenses, unless you just so happen to live where you're racing, which is unlikely. So you have: airfare (or gas if you can drive), hotels, meals, bike transport each way. I figure that, at a minimum, you're looking at $1000 to do IM. Probably closer to $2000. Heck, if it was cheaper to do, I might have signed up for an early season IM, this year. Hopefully, when I have a full-time job and the immediate debts paid off, I can think about getting it checked off my list! For my 70.3, early entry was $200. I got a screaming deal by signing up for the 3 race series for $325! Triathlons are NOT cheap.

And I'm breathing a big sigh of relief for you and yours, cfg.

We've had a very, very nice day. Spin class at the Y this morning (with oldster sub instructor, who is very very nice, just don't expect a killer workout ). He couldn't figure out the stereo system until 10 minutes into class. I managed a decent workout, nonetheless.

We then jetted up to Boulder (with a stop at the multisport shop to pick up this awesome lube stuff I tried last weekend...SO much better than BodyGlide, my wetsuit slid on ridiculously easily!) for friend's DD's bday bash. It was a ton of fun. They had a picnic spot along Boulder Creek right next to a playground, so the kids could play in the water and the playground. Lots of good food. And tubing! Oh my gosh, so fun. I'd never floated like that in a river before, and it was a blast. I took DS through the tamer section, and he loved it, too. If it wasn't so far away, we would totally be there every weekend (and my friends are)!

X just picked up DS and I'm trying to decide how productive to be with my evening. I'm kind of leaning toward not at all. As in, a nap. Maybe a movie. I really, really SHOULD do at least a little homework. But maybe not.

Ugh. Left for camping yesterday morning, came home this afternoon. I had a scratchy, sore throat yesterday but I thought it was from choking on some pop the night before.

Nope. I'm a sicko. Stuffy, headachy, exhausted, and running a fever. And Dh already took M, T, W off for vacation. So.. ugh.

No running, I guess.

Nemesis ~ oh no. I hope you feel better soon .

Gaye ~ that sounds like such a fun day in Boulder. I still wish we were moving to Colorado (instead of Illinois...)

CFG ~ yep, it really is that expensive. And that's just registration! Yet another reason I'll never do Ironman .

Well, I am now the proud owner of a brand new Cannondale CAAD9 Feminine bike ! So beautiful. So light. So fast. I love . I tried a bunch of Specialized (didn't like the shifters), two Cannondales (had a hard time deciding between the CAAD9 and the Synapse), an Orbea, and a Trek. The Cannondale was hands down the right choice. Now if it would just stop raining so I can RIDE!

This morning I got up in time to go watch the triathlon in my town. It starts and ends at the local lake and is a half-mile swim, ten-mile bike, and three-mile run. I think they have space for between 400 and 500 participants. They call it the Appleman.

I realized some things from watching today's Appleman. First, that many of the women weren't super-skinny and didn't look fantastic in bathing suits. The men, too, but that's irrelevant to me. Second, that there were all sorts of bikes, from very technological to not-very. Third, that lots of the people were casual about the race and seemed to be having fun.

All of this information consolidated into my fourth realization: I really want to do it. Maybe next year, if I can figure out how to not drown.

There was a ten-year-old in the race. If he can do it, I think I can, too. Actually, there were several young-looking kids, but most were on relay teams and only did the bike or only did the run. This was the only kid I saw who did all three parts himself. Very impressive.

GAH!!!! I just spilled tea on my laptop! I immediately instinctively flipped it upside down, so I'm hoping that nothing got too far into the keyboard, but I'm flipping out, just a bit, right now. I got on the desktop computer and googled what to do, but there are conflicting reports (no, I will NOT pry each individual key off with a butter knife, thank you...I have learned the hard way that they won't go back on). I think my best bet is just to leave it alone and let it dry right now. Hopefully, by the time I get back from my run, it'll be ok to try turning on. Keep your for me that it still works...I can't afford a new laptop right now, but I NEED one for school.

jaygee~Congrats on the new bike!

lala~You should totally do it...all the cool kids are.

I slept in this morning, figuring that I may as well train in the conditions I'm going to race in, right? So, I'll head out for my 10 miles in a few minutes and it will be blazing hot. Here's hoping I don't get heatstroke.

Hi Dingos!

Okay, this is a little gross...but anyway. Why do my Brooks Adrenaline shoes never dry out? I don't think I ever had this problem with my previous shoes. I really like these shoes but they're getting really stinky and it's nasty to put my foot in a wet shoe, plus I think I'm getting more blisters (even with my wicking socks). I mean, I know I"m sweating but presumably runners do sweat and the shoes should be able to dry out a bit between runs (24 hours). Sometimes it's really humid out and they don't dry out even when out in the sun for a while.

Can I put them in the dryer?

Need gentle parenting help...ds (soon to be 5) is really been difficult lately. Angry, defiant, and occasionally acting out with hands. He has always had a strong will, but this is new. After yelling for a few days, I realized that he is a) missing his dad a lot; b) out of his home element for too long; and c) having to share space with a lot of people. I'm trying to speak quietly, carry through with reasonable consequences, give extra hugs, etc. but it's only partially helping. And when he gets the 'mad face' on, he is totally unresponsive. Then he really cries hard when he realizes I'm mad and/or that other people don't want to be around him. Sigh. Help!?

Had a very sweaty 8 mile run this a.m...what was good was that my brother lent me his Garmin 305 and that was super nifty (but kind of bulky and annoying to wear) and I planned my route to include a supermarket halfway so I could get water which was very necessary. About a 10:30 pace (total time 1:25:36) which isn't bad for a long run on hills in the heat.

My SIL has a dear friend here who is a runner/triathlete, so we've been running together a few times. She is trying to convince me to do a sprint tri, but I"m...I don't know...intimidated! La, maybe we should virtually train together for a sprint tri next summer! I need to get my 3 big races done first (Women's Half in November; Disney Marathon in January; Sarasota Half in March). Then we'll see. Of course that would mean finding a bike and also getting into a pool...to actually swim laps (rather than, you know, lounge and play with the kids )

nic - you can put them in the dryer, preferably on a rack inside the dryer if you have one, but remove your footbeds (insoles) first. those can shrink with high heat. and they really should be drying out on their own, so i am not sure if the humidity is preventing that or what. i know some people buy those moisture absorbing bags that you can shove in there overnight, but i have never used them.

cfg -

RM - i really like the february baby pattern but it is a cardigan, not a dress. it is my go-to baby gift. i don't think i've ever knitted a baby dress but i bet rav has a bunch of great options.

ran a 5k this morning! 34 minutes, which is super slow, but right on par for me it felt good, i have to say.

JG: on your new bike!

Nic: to you and your DS. I can say, from our experience, that my DS (4) really acted out when he was missing his dad. Things seemed to go in cycles of better behavior then worse and then back again. Hang in there. You could try to verbalize some of what you think he's going through during a quiet time with just the 2 of you - My DS is not really very good with words and sometimes I try to do that when he's feeling really frustrated.

And BTW, can I just say that your race schedule sounds AWESOME! I can't wait to hear about all those cool races.

Poppy: sounds just right to me!

Gaye: Oh man, I hope that your laptop is alright! That is a huge panicky fear of mine, that something gets dumped on the laptop. But tea is better than, say, milk, and if you got it turned over quickly, maybe nothing got into the actual guts of the computer. Let's hope!!

La4: Cool! I think it would be a super-neat sport to try out, and it's nice to hear that not everyone out there looks like a professional athlete.

CFG, oh whew!! I'm so glad it didn't happen. Maybe it was all grandstanding, but they should really think at whose expense they are saying such things!

Got my swimming done yesterday, but it might have been the last time until we leave next Saturday. Every day is going to be so busy with packing, dropping stuff off here and there, visiting people, etc. It was awesome, though, 1600 meters at 47 minutes! It is really going a lot better, smoother, and is lots of fun! I always thought swimming would be boring, but it's really not. And I don't miss my ipod at all!
Woooo, I guess that pipe-dream I had about someday doing an IM just got even more unrealistic. I didn't realize that was possible.

nic - I know people who swear by scrunched up newspaper for rain soaked shoes. Not sure how that would work if it's just due to too much humidity, though.

jaygee - woohoo! Congrats on the bike!

Gaye - OMG, that's terrible about your laptop. I hope it's ok!

Mel - I can't believe you're leaving already! It seems like you just got there.

DD2 has officially had too much summer. She doesn't handle being tired very well and today she is melting down/tantruming at every little thing. Ugh. I guess we need to lay off the constant swimming for a bit. Poor thing's got dark circles down to her knees. I know she would feel so much better if she would just take a nap but, unfortunately, that's just not in her repertoire.

jaygee I can feel the excitement that's awesome!

Dingos who have run at Disney--is it worth it. We are considering goint out for the princess half in Feb. would love some feedback.

Thanks
nic~They really should be drying out, I'm not sure why they wouldn't be, unless it's just THAT humid. Maybe try emailing or facebooking Brooks and asking for their recommendations. Their customer service is pretty good, so I bet you'll get a pretty quick response.

mel~Well, there was some milk in with the tea (and some splenda). I really don't think it could have been more than an ounce or two overall. I had about a 1/3 of a mug left after the spill and had probably had about 1/3 before the spill. I'm hoping that it not being a super sugary drink is helpful. I may leave it a few more hours and see. I mean, I DO have the desktop, at least, but I can't take that to school with me. And all my Quicken stuff is on there and hasn't been backed up to the desktop. Everything else is, for the most part, replaceable, I think. But I'm still keeping that I don't need to!

Just spent a nice hour catching up with a good friend from high school and college who has been living in Paris for about 5 years now. She's in Ohio visiting family and planning her wedding, so we got to chat without racking up international calling rates. I was originally going to plan my trip home to coincide with hers, but it didn't make sense for me to go now, during school, when I'll have a month off next month. I'm kind of bummed because she's getting married in Paris in April, and I really really really want to go, but chances are pretty slim because of my clinical requirements. She's also having an "at-home" reception in July, which is slightly more likely that I'll be able to go. I just KNEW she was going to get engaged and married while I was in nursing school (and I told her that today, too, and she laughed ).

rr~A very hot and sweaty 10 miler. Train how you're going to race, right? Well, I finally made it out about the same time as I probably will be getting on the run for the 70.3, so that's good practice, right? My left quad was really, really sore from the stairs on Friday, but it loosened up pretty well within a couple of miles. I feel like my nutrition was pretty solid, and I actually ran my last two miles the fastest of the day. Of course, I really just wanted to be DONE at that point. Now if I can just repeat that run in three weeks, after swimming 1.2 miles and biking 56, all will be well.

Hi dingos! I used to be on this thread a while back and would love to join again!

We traveled a ton last winter and really considered moving to Colorado. We were hit by a drunk driver there and it caused DH a ton of stress. That coupled with a job market that was unfavorable to both of us led us back to Long Island. So here we are again!

I'm training for a 50 miler (JFK 50). I'm not sure I'm in, but I think a 50k I ran in the spring gives me guaranteed entry. I quite nervous about training for it here on LI though. I have NO hills!

TJs: Sounds like an awesome day in Boulder! I so wish we ended up staying there! Maybe I will go back next year for a race... though it will be hard to go from sea level to altitude. I am thinking of the Boulder 70.3 for next year.
Hey SandS! Good to see you here again. Good luck with the 50 miler! I hear you on living in Colorado. I felt the same way when we were there last summer. Sigh....

Gaye ~ I sure hope your laptop recovers. Eeeek!

cfg ~ my DD2 has been the same way. Utterly exhausted, but still not sleeping nearly enough. Summer is sometimes too much, even for me, so I understand .

DH and I crunched the numbers yesterday and it's actually less expensive for us to have two mortgages and all move to Illinois in August than for me to stay in Indiana with the kids and wait until the house sells to move with DH. The cost of a long-term hotel, travelling back here every weekend would actually exceed the cost of our mortgage here + the minimal utilities to keep lights and water on here. So, we're all driving to Illinois on Tuesday to spend a couple of days looking at houses. ACK!!!!! The kids start school there on August 19, so this is all happening very, very quickly.

I'm headed to the Y this morning for a short run and the elliptical and swimming with the tri club tonight. I've decided that working out to combat stress is much more productive than eating !
JayGee- Wow, so fast! Good luck, I hope you find a great house!

I'm still sick. Wednesday is my regular run with a friend, so I am going to lay low until then.

Any advice for my still achy ankle?
I'm back home and feeling overwhelmed and exhausted... mama's gonna run tomorrow, I can tell you that.

(What kind of man doesn't clean up cat hairballs during a week he is home alone with no other responsibilities? My dh.)
Wow JayGee... how exciting. I guess it's worth it to go where the job is. I am having a horrible time breaking back into the job market. My kiddos are starting school this year so I was hoping to be back to work, but no luck.

I ran seven tonight and will do seven or eight around 5 a.m. tomorrow. It is
H-O-T here lately though!
S&S~ Good to see you! I'm bummed you're not in CO anymore...we never did meet up while you were here. That would be awesome if you come out for the 70.3 next year. I probably won't be doing it, but I would definitely come cheer for you! I'll let you know how it goes this year, now that WTC is running the show. GL with the JFK50. I've heard that one's tough! Is that the one kate~mom did?

jaygee~Wow! That happened fast! I hope you're able to find something you like quickly!

So.... This posting is coming to you from my laptop, which (so far ) seems to be working! I ended up buying a 5 pound bag of rice yesterday and letting it sit in that overnight until late this afternoon. OMG, what a PITA getting all the rice out was! But, it's working!

Other than that, we had a busy day running errands...ped to pick up school paperwork, school to drop it off, haircut for DS, Y for a swim, doctor for me, grocery store. I feel like I got a TON done today, which is excellent. Oh, and have I mentioned before how much I my doctor? She rocks. Plain and simple. She easily spends 20 minutes with me just chatting. I went in today because I've had to use my inhaler 3 times in the past 3 weeks, and it was getting kind of low. I figured she would need to actually see me vs. calling in a refill b/c I don't actually have an exercise-induced asthma diagnosis, it's a remnant of the bronchitis I had last fall. She totally agreed with me, listened to my lungs quickly just to say she had, and gave me more refills than I will be able to use before they expire, just in case, and spent the rest of the time asking me about my races.

rr~By the time we got to the Y, I only had an hour to swim, but I really wanted to get 2500 yds in, which usually takes me a little longer. I figured I would just swim as hard as I could and see how many laps I could get in, and I did it! I don't know, I don't think I was really much faster than normal, but it felt like I was for some reason. I tried to concentrate on keeping good form and working hard the whole time. My arms felt like they were going to fall off by the end, but it's all good.

And now, time to study patho...hooray for only having ONE test tomorrow instead of the usual two!

OMG. XH and the GF are splitting up. He's moving out at the end of August.

I am struggling mightily to resist the urge to say "I told you so."

Slightly concerned about DS. Although I honestly don't know what kind of relationship he has with the GF. He only mentions her occasionally to me, and only on a very impersonal basis. I advised XH to call or email our counselor for some advice about how to handle it.

And just because I know you guys understand, here's me doing a little happy dance:

Oh my!!!! Any idea what happened there?
And congrats on an awesome swim ~ 2500m in an hour is great!

Penelope ~ Your DH really needs.... something. Not sure what, but he's not even pulling some of his weight . Hope things improve soon.

Yesterday was a good workout day. I went to the Y in the morning for 30 minutes on the elliptical and a short run/walk. Then back at night for a good swim with the tri club. We did 50m sprint repeats and I managed to hold them at or faster than :55/50m. Not stellar, but good for me .

I'm going to the neurologist this morning for nerve conduction testing. Wish me luck. I've heard it's like a mild electrical shock.... repeated over and over for 30 minutes. Not fun.
