Poop timing/signals?

My baby is just over a month old and although the pee catches are going as well as I would expect, the poops are challenging to catch. He'll show clear signs that a poop in on it's way (gas, grunting or pushing, leg kicking, more gas, etc), but the problem is that this can carry on from a minute to half an hour (or more). I find myself almost always putting him in a diaper and just letting him go.

The foamy poop seems to be a thing of the past and I've recently started him on probiotics so I'm hoping that helps. But in the meantime, should I not worry about poop misses and focus just on the pee? We do have poop catches, but it can be frustrating to see a signal, and stop everything to catch a fart.

I'm definitely no expert, as dd is only 4 1/2 months, but this is what I remember from a few months ago. Sometimes she would just do a wet fart (sorry--that's what dh calls them!), and I'd rush her to the potty only to have nada happen. When I would go to wipe her hiney with a warm, damp wash cloth, it would stimulate her to squirt out more. There was definitely a period when I could have waited forever, knowing she needed to go (popping on and off, the "look", writhing around), but a gentle wiping would help her get it out faster. Also, she tends to go in a few rumbles and squirts. If we missed the cue for the first squirt, we could usually catch the rest of it on the potty (sometimes needing the stimulation).

By three/four months, she started pooping in larger quantity, but less often. Usually first thing in the morning and at sometimes 1-2 more times throughout the day/night. She still takes a long time on the potty to get it all out. As long as she is content and relaxed, we sing songs and hang out. Yes, it gets old singing 20 verses of Old Macdonald, and if she fusses, we get off. Sometimes, if I've rushed her, she fusses when I go to put her dipe back on. Sure enough, when I put her back on the bowl, she goes some more.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write so much, but I hope that helps!

It does help. I don't remember any of this with my daughter, but we didn't start her until 4 months. He's just so completely different.

I like the warm wipe idea. I'll try that. Thanks!

just sharing what i remember from infancy ... as poops become fewer per day you may start to see predictable timings like right after waking up. also, if you offer first thing in the morning (before or after the first nursing), the baby will eventually figure out that this is a good time to go as well (and i have heard from several friends that their babies who used to poop before waking up started to wake up and then poop into the potty). i also remember offering the potty right before bedtime and this became a habit as well. but this was all 3+ months, i dont think we picked up on predictable poop times before that.
