6 yo's obsession with privates

My 6.5 year old DS is obsessed with his private parts...he sticks his hands down his pants, he talks about it, he tries to show it off. We are trying not to overreact since DH was brought up to think his privates were "dirty", we don't want our son to have those same feelings, on the other hand this is too, too much! Also, I'm having a baby anyday now and don't know if this is his way to get my attention? Anyone have any experience with this? Is it age appropriate behavior? We've told him it is ok to touch himself, but it needs to be in private and he totally ignores us!

My dd went through an exploration phase and didn't like underwear at all. We talked about how wonderful private body parts are, labeled them, I gave her privacy when she was exploring her body, we covered the topic of who can touch and see your private body parts and for what reasons, and about our society being one in which we don't show our private body parts to other people. If he is ignoring you he may want the attention he would get when he ignores you for other reasons. I would suggest distracting him first or leaving the room. If he is doing this in front of guests then I think that for their comfort you should send him to his room and not make it an option. If you are alone then leaving the room may be a better option or not making leaving the room a choice in the same way you don't make other things a choice.
