13.5 mo suddenly wanting to nurse all night. What gives?

My DD has always been a relatively good sleeper, so I feel like a bit of a jerk complaining at this point. But all of a sudden things have gotten really bad around here, and we can't figure out what we're doing wrong.

Typically, it goes like this: I nurse DD to sleep around 10 pm and she goes down more or less easily. Once she's asleep, I can easily lay her in her crib where she'll stay for a few hours. If she wakes before we go to bed, I can usually nurse her for a few minutes and put her back down in the crib. At some point in the early morning hours, she wakes up and I just bring her into bed with us, where she sleeps the rest of the night peacefully, waking a few times to nurse and then fall asleep again, which normally doesn't wake DH and barely wakes me.

For the last week, however, she's seemed sleepy earlier in the evening, so I'm getting her down around 8-9 pm. But after only a few hours, she is waking thoroughly and nursing voraciously, refusing to go back into her crib -- so she comes into bed with us and nurses at approximately 1/2 hour intervals for the rest of the night. Because she's nursing so frequently, she doesn't get the letdown she's accustomed to, and she starts to cry at the breast after only a few seconds, which can escalate to a piercing shriek if the milk doesn't come. Last night, I very nearly hauled her out of bed in the middle of the night to go make her a bottle of cow's milk just to get her back to sleep, because it seemed like she was starving.

Anyone else BTDT and have any advice?

Teething?/Cold?

My 13 month old has been in the same boat recently. I have attributed it to teething, as she is sprouting new teeth left and right, and I can even feel a molar just breaking through with my fingernail. Another possibility (for us, anyway) is that she is nursing less and less during the day. I do still nurse on demand, but recently there have been a couple days when she has only nursed 2-3 times during the day (and more at night). She loves food and also seems to like to do whatever DH and I are doing (i.e. eating food). So I think that contributes to it as well. Perhaps it's just a phase right now?

My dd did the same thing around 12 months (although she slept for 45 minute stretches, I guess I should be thankful!) and it only lasted a little while. My guess would also be teething and possibly moving to more night nursing because there's so much to do during the day. Get as much rest as you can and know that it will pass soon!

growth spurt?

My DD nursed ALL night long when she was getting her canines in. I guess they just hurt more. She nursed alot right before pulling up and cruising too. With the teething and dose of ibuprofen helped her sleep abit better for a few hours.

Thanks, everyone! It's definitely not a cold, but I suppose teething is a possibility. I just can't imagine that she'd be sprouting more teeth right now - she has almost a full mouthful at this point, she recently got about six teeth in as many weeks. Doesn't the poor kid get a break at some point? Not to mention her mother!!!

It's been better the last few days, so maybe it was just a growth spurt. But Kimberly, I'm going to check out your nightweaning guide just in case...

Does she have her 1yo molars? Those tortured my DS for MONTHS.

Well, I just checked her little mouth, and she definitely has four molars, one in each corner. I'm fairly certain they've been around for a while. Should she be getting more than that sometime soon?
