Have you/your kids NEVER been sick?

I was just curious how many of you have been healthy your whole life. No runny nose, no cough, no temperature rises, zilch. I was just wondering what you do to keep so healthy? This applies to your kids as well. Toddlers, teens, whatever age. All healthy people need to share your secrets.

its impossible to go through life without any of those things.

healthiness is more about your body doing what its supposed to when exposed to different germs, bacteria, viruses, etc. your immune system is healthy and acting right when you have symptoms (like cough or fever) because those are mechanisms set up by the body to fight off those bad things...

Huh. Sounds impossible to escape all sickness for an entire lifetime! (Unless you're a little baby, lol).

I do think that the less stress and the more sleep you get the more likely you are to fight off any potential illnesses that come your way. Of course a well-balanced diet goes a long way too. And then there's good old hand washing.

Yeah I suppose you're right. I guess I was wondering why some people are always sick and others are rarely sick, if ever. Example: One person said her 4 yo has never had any symptoms of a cold. Ever. While OTOH I have a friend whose is constantly wiping her childrens noses and complaining about one illness or another. Both people seems to lead similar lifestyles, but results vary widely. It just made me wonder what the real difference was.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There are definitely those who seem to never get sick. I wish I knew the secret - I'm definitely not one of them!

we get sick but not very often. ds1 was 5 the first time he threw up and had his only sick visit at age 7 (ear infection) ds2 has never had a sick visit either. not sure if its because we hs or not. we're nt germaphobes either.

I agree no fever or runny nose, etc. is impossible to avoid - and not very healthy considering how the immune system works, yk?

That said, my four kids (ages 3, 5, 7, 9) have never been to the doctor for a sick child visit - beyond my 5 yo going to urgent care for breathing treatments as a precaution (he does have allergies that mess with his airway). My kids do get colds, though - they just don't warrant abx. or being seen by a ped. (so, nothing like RSV or pneumonia or strep or bacterial infections). Why, I dunno - just luck, I think.

I have no idea why some people seem to get sick more often than others, it may just be that some kids pick germs up easier because they put things in their mouth more, or stand closer to other kids (so more in the line of fire from sneezes, etc.). I think the real indicator of health is how one recovers from things like colds, does the cold just run it's course for a week or so and then they are fine, or does it turn into an ear infection/bronchitis/sinus infection/pneumonia? My kids do get colds a couple of times each winter, but they've never had the cold turn into anything *more* (like an ear infection or bronchitis)..so far (knock on wood. LOL).

It might be genetic too- some people are just better at fighting off stuff than others due to their genetic makeup, so it's just the luck of the draw!

My kids have never seen a doctor for illness or taken any type of pharmaceutical. My son is 8 and has had a couple days where he didn't feel too good, took a nap, felt fine after that. He just gets extremely tired when he picks up a bug and sleeps it off. DD had two short fevers, lasting a few hours, when she was younger but nothing the last few years. I let my babies crawl around on public floors, never use antibacterial soap etc LOL. I believe in vitamin D, exposure to plenty of germs, fermented foods and supporting the immune system instead of getting rid of symptoms with drugs.

My son gets sick more than most kids, has since he was a baby--say starting around 4 or 5 months? not a newborn/tiny infant... For us, it's nutritional deficiencies (got a great start in life from me ) that's combined with some other, more ongoing things. So we're working on those. We had one winter where I think he was sick only as often as a typical kid his age, I felt pretty good about that. Food intolerances are part, nutritional stuff has been big (and extremely effective for us in preventing colds and such from turning into more complicated illnesses), the investigative process, overall, has been very helpful.

I don't think it's at all genetic for him, except to the extent that he's got the same general tendencies and weaknesses I do--but I think those are manageable and aren't destiny so much as useful pieces of information to use when making choices.

My 14mo DS has never been ill except for a couple teething fevers. All I can brag about is avoiding all illness in the last year and a half, which is the first time.

I wouldn't want to go through life without getting sick, especially as a child. It's good for the immune system and while sickness is unpleasant, it's unavoidable and not necessarily bad.

We hardly get sick. I have a pretty large family. We started homeschooling about 3 years ago and get sick even less. I'd say when my oldest two were in school we averaged about 2 illnesses per year. Which is actually not all that bad given they were in school. Now we average about 1 per year.. and not everybody gets the same illnesses. My oldest had quite a few colds as a baby and lots of ear infections, coincidentally he was my only one I wasn't able to breastfeed. My babes that were all breastfed didn't really get sick until AFTER they stopped nursing.
