orangey yellow poops and stains in dipes? plus other "symptoms"

I am EBF my babe- she is 2 weeks 5 days. We went through green poops which I fixed with the whole getting more hind-milk into her, and but now about 1.5 weeks later her poops have turned more orangey (rather than yellowy) and are staining her diapers (and anything else the poop touches).
Not that I care about the stains (they come out in the sun), but I am curious/concerned because I thought that BF poop is mustard yellow and doesn't stain...??
Babe has also broken out in baby acne on her face (the doula agrees it's acne) and she has had a touch of diaper rash (?) for a few days which does get better with air but hasn't gone away. I have started to blow dry her butt between changes, change more often and use a touch of weleda calendula diaper creme in her crack. The crack is a touch red and her butt cheeks have tiny red spots scattered around which looked a bit like the acne when they were worse and were scattered more throughout the whole diaper area before we started airing her more. I figured it was the heat and the PUL pants but I am a bit concerned about allergens in my milk though DH and I are both allergy free. Not sure if the skin probs are at all possibly connected to the orange poop problem which of course I am guessing is related to BF.

My baby has had orange poops from about week 2, with no 'seeds'. I have decided that it is a variation of normal, since he is growing well and is a happy guy.

that sounds good to me! I go to my MW next week and I already called once this week so I don't want to bug her again...

Orangey poop here, too, though it doesn't seem to stain anything.

For diaper rash we are using a hair dryer... a minute or so on low every diaper change. DD loves it, even puts her feet and bum up as soon as she hears it turned on. It's nice to know she's super dry before the new dipe.

DS1 had orange poop that definetly stained. DS2 has it occasionally too. I really don't think its anything to worry about.

babies just get acne. my first ped said it's the same as for teenagers - their pituitary gland is in overdrive because they are growing and developing so rapidly.

also orangey yellow poop here, though it is seedy and smells "right". i only worry about green, mucousy, and vinegar smelling poop - or the other big stuff like blood, etc. poop color can change based on what you eat too.

yep- my DD had the same thing. . .the acne, the rash and the orangey poos. The acne is normal and likely unrelated. . .the rash I was told was just her newborn skin acclimating to the poo. . .and as for the color, she still has a variety of colors in her diaper at 4 mos, and rarely any seeds (she is EBF) but always seems happy and is very healthy and gaining wt!

YAY for me not having to change anything in my diet or anything! but poor babies having to go through all this

p.s. I actually started to blow dry her butt a couple of days ago, it seems to be helping and she does love it, but she seems to pee as soon as I am done almost every time and needs another new diaper!!

Vinegar Poo

You said you'd only worry about it if it was mucusy or smells like vinegar-we've got both here. I read that the mucus like quality was due to a virus, but can't seem to get a straight answer as to what causes the vinegar smell. Help me out?

for me the culprit for vinegar smell/mucous is too much foremilk. i block feed, so i use the same boob for 2-3 hours (so if he eats at 1 pm and is hungry at 2 pm, we use the same boob. at 3 or 4 i would switch sides - but he only eats one side per feeding). my milk seems to come out faster than he can handle quite yet.

the mucous might be that, and might clear up if you can get more hindmilk in the kiddo, or it could be dairy related. if it were me, i would start with block feeding, then if that doesn't work after a day or two cut down on dairy and see if that helps.

and spend time reading kellymom.com

When DS was tiny his poop looked liked canned pumpkin. Very orange, not seedy, sometimes mucousy. Since then he has always had softer poo but never any bowel issues.

I agree that kellymom.com is a great resource.

Another pumpkin pooping, super-stainer here too. Who gets bumps when he gets too warm in his Thirsties. The bumps don't happen with his Imse Vimse Bumpy Wool covers (which I love). We're at 6 weeks and the acne that appeared at 2 hasn't totally gone away.

In my diaper care booklet from GMD it says the staining depends on the milk. Dad sweetly tells me it's because my milk has lots of vitamins (it is, itself, slightly peachy toned).

When I remember to take my vitamins his pee is super yellow too.

Have you tried lanolin on the rash?

We have sometimes orange non-seedy poop here, too. But it doesn't seem to be causing any issues.

Northern Essence diaper salve is freakin awesome to use on the various baby rashes & acne. DD2 has somewhat sensitive skin & she can get a bum rash v quickly & she gets heat rashes. I put that salve all over her face & chest when she had her newborn acne/heat rash combo & it helped clear it up v v quickly. I put some on her bum every day b/c she gets that bum crack rash easily. We use both PUL and wool covers.

My first had more orangey poo than yellow and it most definitely stained. I've never heard that bm poo didn't stain. It suns out really well and it comes out really well if you rinse it immediately, but it most definitely stains.

The diaper rash sounds normal as well. If you use baby wipes, I'd stop and just use wet baby face clothes to clean her, making sure to dry her well before putting on a new diaper.

Signs of dairy intolerance in my kids were: screamy babies after a feed, little red-threads of blood in their poo, green/frothy/explosive poo, stinky gas.

My 2 month old DD has orange poop too. It's never yellow. Sometimes there are seeds, sometimes not. Sometimes it's foamy. She's very happy and chubby, so I'm not worried!

To prevent diaper rash you could try elimination communication. DD always poops in her infant potty now and it's really helped that redness go away. Every time I'm not paying attention and she poops in her diaper she gets a bit red. Also, if you use prefolds or fitted cloth diapers without a cover and take it off as soon as they pee it keeps the rashes away! You can lay a strip of fleece in the crotch as a stay dry liner too if you want, and that will also protect the diaper from any diaper cream you use on the bum.

I think lots of nakkie time is good for preventing/clearing up diaper rash. All of our tummy time (and most of the floor time, period) is naked and on a swaddlebees waterproof pad. My 7wo loves it.
