According to their facebook page, UNFI buying clubs have as well.

It is a legal liability for them, often it isn't make as having alcohol content.

Yeah, our local co op has been sending out notices about how they are going to have to restrict purchases to those 21 and up.

Apparently, we can all thank Lindsay Lohan for this-- she blamed kombucha for her SCRAM bracelet going off. :

The Complete Patient blog had a post on this recently here

Just so y'all know - kombucha is SO easy and cheap to make.

This is a good story but not true. More information about the situation here from an interview with GT Dave.

the Lindsey rumor is kind of hilarious. i work at a small chain natural marketplace and we can't get it at all. not just GT's but also vibranz and high country. unfi and natures best are refusing to carry it.

We do this too! I love our kombucha super yummy and I get to choose how long to let it ferment!

Cheers!

While I loved blaming Lohan for my toddler's meltdown when i could not produce kombucha this week, I'm glad to have a straight story from GT Dave. What I don't get is why Whole Foods got "concerned" in the first place - how did it get on their radar?

And why are other stores pulling it too? All the other natural food stores in my town are voluntarily pulling all brands of kombucha for now, except one store (a local coop) which is still carrying one brand (a local brand).

Well, if UNFI is pulling it, its probably partially an issue with suppliers as much as anything else... UNFI is a *HUGE* supplier of natural food stores.

Yeah, I think there's something missing here. Lindsay Lohan may not be personally responsible for kombucha being pulled but it sounds like one thing may have influenced the other a bit more than is being alluded to here. I have a hard time believing that within days of the media speculating that kombucha may have enough alcohol to set off the bracelet, Whole Foods suddenly decides they need to look into the alcohol content and the two things have nothing to do with each other. I could be reading the info wrong though...

I just hope for GT Dave's sake as well as all the independent kombucha producers sake that this thing gets sorted out quickly.

DH loves GTS kombucha, we usually get at least a case a month. We get it either through our UNFI Buying club or our local foods co-op who I am sure also gets it through UNFI. I am going to have to go to the co-op tomorrow and buy them out if they have any available!

According to this, an inspector in Portland, ME found a problem 6 months ago, which set off the chain of concern.

Doh, sorry- see, this is what I get for ignoring natural news in favor of gossip sites occasionally.

Nice. So it is just a weird coincidence. How not fun for everyone involved.

I wish they would have said what GT Dave's tested at when they found the problem 6 months ago--I'm very curious.

Well that explains why I couldn't get a bottle from QFC tonight , I was so looking forward to it too. Gingerberry is the best!

Our local WFS had all the GTs marked down to $1 so I bought them all. There was a note on the shelf that said a batch tested high in alcohol but that was it - they didn't say anything about not carrying it anymore, once this specific issue was resolved. This same WFS (mom & pop) carries at least 2 other brands of kombucha.
