Earwigs!!!

How do I get rid of them?
I think that they are eating my basil, togethor w/ the japanese beetles.
The earwigs are also invading everywhere else. I keep finding random ones in the house, too, which grosses me out!! Yuck!!

No tips i'm afraid!

But I know what you mean about finding them in the house. I was making a cottage pie a few days ago when an earwig suddenly ran across my kitchen worktop. I was really freaked out lol!
I know they're only small, but its the same thing as finding spiders in the house, they are not welcome!
Anyway, I managed to catch it in a glass and put it outside, but it put up quite a fight with those spikes on its backside! My DS thought it was hilarious!

It takes some time to work effectively, but all crawling insects are susceptible to Diatomaceous Earth when spread around the home and yard. They sell it at most garden and hardware stores (especially the neighborhood stores instead of big box) it comes in different brands. It is completely safe, completely chemical free, and fine for family and pets, and it will also take great care of slugs if you have any issues with them as well in your garden. Basically it looks like a dust, but it is the fossilized skeletons of diatoms (single celled organisms) and it is basically microscopic glass. It won't cut us or our pets but it will cut into the exoskeleton of crawling insects and dehydrate them. The only problem I've had with it is that it does wash away in the rain, so only use it outside if you're expecting a few clear days, just sprinkle it down wherever you're having troubles, they crawl through it, and your problem should soon be solved! (to use indoors just leave it around the house for a little while and then just vaccuum it away) Hope this helps! I know how much I HATE seeing earwigs around my home and yard (I know they're harmless but they're still one of the creepier of the creepy crawlies! ick) and this has worked for me!

One year what I thought was slug damage turned out to be earwig damage. I put out some beer in a pie pan, dug it under to ground level and got more earwigs than anything else. So, beer might be a good one too if you don't want to use DE and keep all the good bugs away too. Hope you find a solution soon, I know how damaging they can be.

Thanks for posting about this! I think in the back of my mind I always kinda assumed that earwigs ate other bugs. Maybe it's the scary looking butt pincers that make them seem predatory?

I'm also going to pick up some DE, I'd love to have something to help me keep bugs out of the house without chemicals.

oh thanks so much for the tips!!
I will try the beer in the pie pan trick, see if it works.
...but I am sure I will have to go the DE route. I just hate to kill the other good bugs too.

handpicking as many as you can (at night with a flashlight -- that's when they seem to climb up and feed on plants) a few nights in a row will really cut down on the rate of damage.
