oh the inconsistency...

Some days DD (14m) is miss-free or virtually miss-free... and the other morning she actually (for the first time ever!) took herself to the potty to poo w/out prompting. (past 2 weeks or so she is very interested in taking herself to the potty- but not to use it- more for the motor challenge of backing up onto the seat, I think). But the day before that, in the morning before the sitter came (at 9!) she had pooped on the floor twice AND peed in her undies and then on the floor! So unpredictable!!

She is signing potty all the time but its hard to tell if she's just talking about the potty or needs to use the potty. She also occasionally signs WHEN she is peeing in a diaper/undies, but rarely in advance. Oh, and when we are not home, she is willing to use SOME out-and-about potties and others, NO WAY. I cannot discover a rhyme or reason to it either (not like she is afraid of autoflush potties or something). Sometimes she signs very insistently, like she needs to use the potty, but when I put her on, no dice.

Anyway, assuming this is a pretty normal young toddler thing to do but she is just all over the map lately!

wow, I'm impressed that she goes on the potty! We have regressed in the actually going while on the potty. He talks about it and signs it, and walks around with it, but when he's on it, he would rather get off and pee on the floor

I would say it's totally normal at 14m to not get potting!

pretty typical for that age. my youngest hit that phase around 12 months and it lasted about a month. then she got more and more consistent at home over the next two months, and it just took us a couple of months after that for me to get brave about stopping the trainers when away from home (which was my own thing, not hers). sounds to me like you're in the home stretch

lol I'm hoping this is true. We're moving to NYC in the beginning of Sept and I would be excited to destash my diapers (a lot are loans and it would be good to return them or pass them along) and then switch to out-and-about trainers and undies at home. Also who knows if I'll have easy access to laundry so I am hoping not to have a big old diaper pail. She'll be just over 16m so I know its optimistic but my non-ECed DS was out of daytime diapers by about 21 months so my frame of reference is a little non-mainstream-US anyway...

its so funny to see her signing for potty all the time-- she literally NEVER made any signals or signs for it until really recently (NOTHING, all our ECing was based on timing. She also didn't seem to care or tell me if she was wet). And exciting that it seems right now once a day or so she actually takes herself to potty (if potty is right there and she is nakey-bum, of course... I don't have to convince anyone on the EC board that having plenty of nakey-bum time is a good thing). All new for her. She's just been exploding with her motor and communicative skills lately, so it sort of makes sense.

Hope we don't have one of these dreaded potty pauses in the near future! I can see how demoralizing that would be when you become attached to the idea of your little one being almost done with dipes...

DD just started out of the blue signing poop so I went along with it and sure enough she would poop in the potty and now just a few days later she signs when she has to pee as well although she is using the sign for poop for both but I ain't going to complain! I don't rely on her to tell me every time she is only 15 months and still has the odd miss!

But it does sound like you are on the home stretch! She still signs when she sees a potty and sometimes signs and or brings me the potty just to sit for ten seconds and jump up to look in an empty potty!

What's the poop sign? My son uses the potty sign, but mainly in response to us asking. I would love to teach him poop.
