Hi all!

I was a frequenter on here a few months back, then I took a break....but now I have a Q.

To make a long story short, I found out about 9 days ago (CD 7) I found out that Melatonin can be considered a oral contraceptive because it 1.) Can make a woman not ovulate and 2.) it effects a man's sperm quality. So, my husband and I immediately stopped taking it. He took it about once a week and I was taking it every night! AH!! The past 2 cycles I didn't ovulate and I couldn't figure out why, until now.

Anyway....
I had some pain in my lower abdomen on my right side yesterday, it was minor, I thought maybe I'd O today or tomorrow. Then, today the pain got really bad. I thought maybe it was an UTI so I went to the doctors for a urine test and they called around 4:15 to tell me it wasn't a UTI, but they closed at 4:30 so I couldn't go in to see the doctor. The pain is moderate right now.

What I'm wondering is after a couple months of annovulatory cycles, can your O be stronger or, at least the pain?

I took a OPK this afternoon and it was positive, so the timing is right.

TIA!

I don't know the answer to your question, but it does seem like it could be ovulation especially if the pain is starting to subside. I'd start BDing ASAP!!! Good luck!

Yep, my best guess is your body had a REALLY strong O since it had been surpressed for a few months

I usually don't get O pains but when I was taking soy isoflavons one month my ovulation delayed by a week but I got such strong O pains I literally doubled over in pain and was nauseated.

I'd take it as a good sign and go get your man!

I get O pains every month. I would be grateful it you could explain more about the connection between Melatonin and ovulation. I know that the body makes it naturally every night, so I don't understand how that could be a problem. I also know that it is a free radical fighter, I don't see why an anti Oxidant would suppress ovulation. Were you taking it to sleep better? If so, how are you sleeping now? I take it once in a while, and I used to take it all the time when I was working shifts.

I don't know how it acts as an oral contraceptive, I just have read that it does and it connected the dots for why I haven't been ovulating. Here are two articles on Melatonin that mention it's use for birth control.

http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple...Name=MELATONIN

http://www.medicinenet.com/melatonin-oral/article.htm

I was using it to help me fall asleep, without some type of sleep aid, I can't fall asleep by myself until early morning, which is called delayed sleep-phase disorder (DSPD). If I don't take anything, I don't fall asleep until 3-4am and I don't wake up until noon, 1pm. Now I am taking Valerian Root to help me fall asleep at a normal time.

Yes, I've actually had this happen - after being on hormonal birth control and not ovulating, my first ovulation was horrendously painful. Then after having DD, my first couple of ovulations were really painful as well. It's like the pipes get rusty or something.

Thanks for the info on Melatonin. From what I understand, the contraceptive effect works in 2 forms - a high dose and prolonged use. The dose used was Mg (standard dose for sleep like I use is 3 mg). Prolonged use "extends" nighttime and therefore allows the human body to mimic species that are seasonal breeders.
So, from what I understand from this, a standard dose of 3 mg, taken only at bedtime, could have not been the reason for my infertility. Also, other studies suggest that caffeine lowers Melatonin. So I don't think that an occasional 3 mg at bedtime with a cup of coffee in the morning could be a problem, even while cycleing.

Another explanation could be that you could be growing follicles but no egg is released; so you could end up with functional cysts, which can be painful.

good luck to you!
