just a FBX grumble here... struck out at dentist and doctor this week, in terms of informed professionals... I guess we were spoiled going to Joanne Spears in beg., and now it is time for reality...
1- ped dentist Johnson's hygienist told me that the AAP recommends weaning at a year. So the words "AT LEAST" a year (usually italicized) mean nothing. I was too shocked by her ignorance to even respond, but will talk to the dentist himself about it next time.
2- TVC - Gannett- I was concerned with DS(20 mos) having peanut allergy, if it was okay if I still ate PB while we are still nursing. She said, "Well, you could just stop nursing!!" I was like... "or I could stop eating PB!!" how bout that??? And she mentioned in many different ways how she thought I should stop... how i need sleep.. how you dont want to end up w. a 3 yr old nursing, etc. There was a med student there listening to all this... hoping she noticed how nice it was that I could soothe B so easily with nursing, though that was even shot down by doc as "comfort nursing".. so what if it is?? what is wrong with that?? some have binks, others have the boob... oh my, well, thanks... didnt know who to vent to... Oh, aksign, I'm sorry. That sounds like a horrible visit. There are some BF friendly places here in town.

My kids and I all see Dr. Tanner for dentistry. He's never commented on my BF schedule, but he does have special notes in our files that my kids don't get fluoride treatments and they have to ask me *every time* for X-rays. He's very good with little ones.

As for the TVC thing...if it's not for insurance reasons that you see this Dr., I'd really just shop around for a ped you like. I've heard good things about Dr. Foote.

Good luck,
P

Thanks, that article is awesome! I think a dip netting adventure sounds like a fantastic birthday date for my hubby, and the big day is coming up. Maybe we'll even *gasp* get a sitter!

I'll vote for Dr. Foote. I brought up weaning today (when/if the combination of tongue tie and preggo hormones kills my supply and our freezer stash) and when he said DD had probably gotten most of the benefits of breastfeeding already, he followed it with "or did I just get myself fired?" lol. He did say something about how we wouldn't want her to still be nursing at 3, but he makes a lot of weird jokes and I would be really surprised if he was actually concerned about a 3 year old still breastfeeding. He's been really good at giving us medical advice, deferring to our wishes, and keeping his job about medicine and health and letting us do the parenting. Unless he thought BFing were dangerous, he wouldn't worry about it or say anything.

Hahaha he DOES know his patients.

Did anyone else get that sunshine here in Anchorage?? OMG, I almost complained about the heat until I realized it was like our first sunny day all summer!
Tammy, we had 80F and clear skies yesterday, so we had a supersoaker fight and smoothies. I had to start freezing plastic bottles full of water to set out for our bunnies to lie against when they're hot!

I love Alaska, but I'm the first to admit I'm here for the cold, not beach weather.

I hope everyone was outside enjoying the weather this weekend!

I got laid off a few weeks back and I've been trying to decide what to do about a job. DH and I have enough in savings to get us through until the semester starts and he starts working again, and theoretically I could wait until then and get a part time tutoring job in an elementary school so I could have an easy to work around schedule and we could still take a long Christmas break.

But then a really-fantastic-OMG-this-is-perfect job was in the paper this Sunday. But it's full time. And TBH, I'm not 100% sure that I want to be away from my daughter that much even if she is home with her dad. Plus, I *gasp* might not be able to leave and go see family for a month if I get this job.

Decisions, decisions.

Oh, and if I find a job with health insurance, I realized that it might not be as good as Denali Kid Care. I really liked not paying any co-pays last time!

Oh well, I suppose all my hemming and hawing is pre-emptive since I haven't even applied yet, let alone interviewed or been offered the job.

What I really came here to ask was, do you guys find AK companies/organizations willing to work around extended vacations? It seems like most Alaskans I talk to mention taking longer than average vacations, but maybe they've been at their jobs longer? What do you think?

Oops. I think my post didn't submit.
Sarah - you should have DKC through your entire pregnancy. And if you have it, you can choose to not get insurance and keep it but if you get it and then don't renew it is when you might have an issue. There is a program that will pay your premiums however. Feel free to message me if you like. I do outreach for DKC but I don't work for the state. I think you should apply for the job. I mean you can always turn it down.
for all the preggos.
I'm excited to join a local board. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather today. I'm home sick but it was nice to go for a walk. Tuckered DS out so lunch is halfway made on the counter while he fell asleep on the couch.

Hi, boogaloo! Welcome to the board!

We are so happy to have DKC. Seriously. It has helped with so many things that would have been true hardships in a single-income family with 6 kids (5 at home). We have pretty good insurance now, but it is still such a help to us.

You might check your income limits, too, Sarah. Remember you'll have a family of 4, so your DKC limit will go up.

Congrats to all the pregnant mamas! I'm green with envy!

I'm getting our school year all prepped and ready...this is I think the second summer we've taken "off," and I kind of like it, but it also sort of drives me nuts. It took both me and my 14yo WEEKS to remember there was no school work to be done! She did 8.5 credits as a FReshman at home last year, which was really 9.5 with all the volunteer hours she put in and extra time at Tang SOo Do. Crazy. This year she's sticking to 6.5 credits and trying really hard not to take any more classes. :P

We've been spending a lot of time outdoors, playing with the bunnies, having water fights, eating smoothies, etc.

Today was library and a park day....and here's my fun Fbx story:

W took the bus from her work to the library. She rode her bike part of the way TO work, so she had to take it with her to the library. W put the bike on the front of the bus. The bus switched drivers at her stop, (the library), and the new driver only opened the back door. As W was walking to get her bike...THE BUS DROVE OFF WITH IT. So I spent 5 minutes on the phone with a VERY rude guy at bus dispatch describing it and making sure the driver wouldn't let anyone else take it, and then had to hare it up to the U to meet him at his stop. We got the bike back, but the driver didn't even say *sorry* to my daughter. Grrrr.

/end fun story

I hope we get more rain tonight!!!

Welcome Boogaloo! Thanks for the info. I know this is way too early to worry, but I can't help myself. I think the job will be wonderful, and I'm sure the benefits will work themselves out.

OMG! How frustrating! Some people are just so unconcerned with other people. Why not find a job where you can work alone and not have to worry about providing decent service?

Wow P, I would call and ask to talk to a manager. The mistake was just that but the rudeness was totally uncalled for.

Can I lurk? I'm visiting Alaska for the first time in a few weeks, and hoping to move there sometime
post #54 of 98
Congratulations on all the preggos!

We are still planning on moving, late september is the date right now. Our house is going on the market this Friday, and hopefully things will settle down for a few weeks. My oldest DD is turning three tomorrow... wow! and we are excited to share the b-day festivities with a very friendly neighbor who shares her b-day.

As far as our move goes, we are doing alot of internet house shopping, but it's hard to really shop before we know what our house is going to sell for. But Eagle River is in the top running right now. I am also making a mental list of things I want to get before we move up there. Coming from Chicago, I think we are pretty well prepared for the winters, but not necessarily the winter activities. New snow pants for everybody, I need new rain gear, those types of things. Once our house sells, I will be hitting the clearance racks at REI!!

Sure, just jump on in. Where are you visiting and how long do you get to stay?
P - how rude! I hate "customer service" like that.
I just heard that my nephew in law just got out of the hospital with a stomach bug. Scary. I offered the leftover frozen BM but I have a feeling they won't want it.
Will anyone else be at the Egan center for project homeless connect tomorrow?
Please anyone who needs help with insurance message me and I'll give you my real info. Right now we're like me working one day over income so soon I'm taking an unpaid day off. DH is a SAHD and UAA student so it'd really help us. The irony of helping families get DKC and being barely over is hard for me to get over.

In usual fashion, I'm a half a month late to sub to this thread! I started a raw vegan diet and quite honestly, it seems like I'm spending most of my online time searching for recipes and the other half of my time making those recipes LOL I'm hoping it will get a little easier the longer I do it.

Congrats to all the PG mamas!

I wish we'd get some more warmth. I'm tempted to go to Fairbanks for a while, just to thaw. This one day of warmth every couple of weeks is starting to drive me a bit batty.

I'm reading along, just not much to say...
unemployment payments have finally started (They were delayed because apprently DH forgot to click some final submit button or something so for the first three weeks they didn't pay us because we didn't have our paperwork done...he's appealed and the hearing is in two weeks so maybe we'll get back pay but who knows...)
DH has enrolled for the summer short term (started this week) and has a couple of classes now, then theoretically he'll have full time through the school year. He's figuring to do some subbing here along with taking classes...all that will go out the window of course if he gets one of those last-minute-before-school-starts kind of jobs...honestly I kinda don't want the insanity and stress of a hurried/harried move like that, but I would rather have a job than not... so we're moving forward with the school plan but still may scrap it

Karen, I've been watching the raw stuff you've been posting in FB, it looks so good! I know a couple of the recipes have been epic fails, but please keep sharing!!! I've been thinking that I'd like to start trying some of these more intense dietary things, one at a time, for a couple of weeks each...stuff like going raw or completely sugar free. I know we're not going to make any of them happen long term in this family, but I'm interested to try them out, and to see how it makes me feel to be hyper conscious of what I eat, you know?
