fluid in ear for about 6 months

I started noticing dd saying "huh? HUUUHHH?!" to everything I say (sometimes I need to repeat 3-4x!) early this year. It could have started a little earlier but thats about when I noticed, "oh, this might be a problem" Went to the ped for her 3 year wcv (primarily to see what was up with her ears) in feb/marchish. Confirmed, lots of fluid in each ear. No infection. The ped wasn't particularly helpful.. just said it would clear up, might take a month or so. (meanwhile I'm thinking, a month of having to repeat myself? Gee thanks!!) Went to the chiro, had her ears adjusted and some little trick where she sticks a finger into her throat to open up the eustachian tubes to let them drain? Supposed to drain instantly. I never really noticed a decrease in the "huh" though. Last week we went back to the chiro and had her take a peek in her ears. Still fluid. Did the adjustment again.. no change. Still seems to be having trouble hearing.

Now.. is it just me or is that a LONG time to go with impaired hearing function? Her speech seems fine to me, but she's not yet 3.5 so I wouldn't expect her to have perfect pronunciation. She uses the F sound instead of the S sound in words that begin with S.. thats the main thing I can think of that she mispronounces. But she can talk and be understood (most of the time, there are occasions that she's difficult to understand). One thing that brought this back to the front of my mind is we just met a little girl in our neighborhood and dd played with her for a few hours one afternoon. Toward the *end* of that, I found out that the child has a (recently discovered) moderate hearing loss and will be receiving hearing aids soon. Just from spending the afternoon with her I had NO idea. So seeing how unobvious a hearing loss severe enough to require hearing aids can be makes me think my dd deserves a closer look.

Whats a reasonable course of action to remedy this? I'm thinking we need to go back to the ped, but I want to be prepared how to be the best squeaky wheel I can be. Any experiences?

We had this problem with my DD1. However, she wasn't even 2 yet and was not talking at all because of it. We opted for tubes....mostly because DD1 and DD2 had both had RSV and had gotten severe ear infections from it that we had trouble clearing with antibiotics. I tried the chiropractor too. We had DD2 on antibiotics for 2 months and it didn't even touch the infection so we HAD to get tubes for her. (she was only 4 months when she got tubes....2 months when she had RSV and the ear infections started) DD1's infection had cleared but she had residual fluid for a long time. Within 2 days of getting tubes she had 3 new words. It was crazy.

In your case, since your DD is older...and it's summer, I'd wait a little while and see what happens and go from there.

i would keep pushing your hcp or ped. this needs to be looked at more, does she act like her ears hurt or bother her? as a kid i would always freak out if i felt like something was off with my ears.

Have you removed dairy/gluten (or any other allergens) to see if that helps? And/or have you looked at seasonal allergies which can also cause fluid in the ears?

A friend of mine's son has this and as a result, his whole family is LOUD because they've adjusted to his not being able to hear right. He's 10yo. And when people speak at a regular volume, he does the "huh?" all the time too.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of allergies as a possibility. She won't be thrilled. Cheese is its own food group in this house!
