Background info: A few months ago my 58 yo uncle had a stroke. He is not expected to regain full mobility (still in a wheelchair) and has moved in with my grandparents. They live near a top-notch rehab facility, have plenty of land and have begun construction on a small wheelchair-accessible apt attached their home.
My uncle did not have medical insurance at the time of the stroke. He's selling his house and has cashed out some savings but I can't imagine that it will cover the medical bills and future medical costs he is facing. My grandmother mentioned that they are helping pay his medical bills. She and my grandfather have always been responsible with money and have a comfortable (though probably not excessive) amount saved.
This seems like a tenuous situation at best. My grandparents are in good health but they're also 85 years old and likely to have medical expenses of their own in the near future. They come from a generation that did not carry debt-- so if a bill is due and they have the money in the bank, they go ahead and pay it.
Who should they consult to get some financial advice about where its most appropriate to help and to find out what other resources are available to my uncle? I know they have a financial planner but would he be knowledgeable about medical debt?
